firmware update and GPS issues

Hey all, I'm new to this forum and to n95s, I just got one last week (standard 1gb version), and I'm mostly enjoying it, considering it is that first phone I have bought with my own money (yay for new job!).

My first issue was a little update issue. I updated the firmware last night from whatever it was (10.*) to the current version (probably branded since I didn't change the product code, but I'm a little new to this) which was 20.0.015 (should there be an extra '.' before the "15" there? Nokia Software Update says no) and I had a whole bunch of trouble because I tried to restore a backup, which I found out here doesn't work if you try to restore the phone settings across a firmware update.

I've read that you should simply backup everything except the settings, but in the backup app, it doesn't give me that option. All it has under 'Settings' is to backup either the phone memory, the memory card, or both. Should I be updating my version of PC Suite? All I installed was the version that came with the phone.

Anyway, the main issue is that I can't seem to search for my house using Nokia Maps. I've downloaded the maps for Australia and cleared all the other ones out, before I downloaded, using the Map Loader.

I've confirmed that the maps are actually in there because I can search for a main road near my house and manually pan and zoom into my street, but whenever I attempt to use the search function to search directly for my street, it doesn't return any results. And the map app defaults it's position to canberra, whereas I am in melbourne, which I suppose indicates that it can't position me using GPS.

Also, whenever I start up Nokia Maps, it warns me that network usage is disabled. If we're using satellites for GPS positioning and I already have the maps loaded onto the phone, why do I need a network connection?

I'm not able to get any info on the satellites I'm connected to, but I haven't tried it outside yet because it is hot enough that I would simply melt, so I'll be trying that first thing tomorrow.

I'm sure this question or many like it have already been answered although I wasn't able to find anything when I searched, so if you know of a topic that addresses this topic, just direct me to it and I can work with that.

Yes, all the questions have been already answered🙄
1) Do not use any backup modes, neither built in, nor PC Suite.
Just synchronise your phone with PC normally before and after the FW upgrade, then reinstall manually all the applications. Restoring your phone any other way very often messes everything up.
2) You need network connection to use A-Gps enabled in latest firmware.
Without it your N95 can take anything up to 30min to get a fix first time after FW upgrade. A-Gps makes using built in GPS in N95 a breeze.
3) Even with A-Gps you probably won't be able to get a fix indoors.
(well, why would you need that anyway :tongue😊
4) In Nokia maps to see your Gps position you have to press 0 after getting a fix.
5) Does your street name appear on the map? If not then it's just the map's fault, there are many places in the world not covered yet.
6) I'd so bloody rather be in Australia now instead of London...
