Red Dwarf Mobisodes Now Available

Looking for the BBC TV comedy Red Dwarf to appear on your mobile? Look no further, you can downoad specially formatted 'mobisodes' and ring-tones from www.red-dwarf.mobi . For 3 pounds an episode, Pitch Entertainment will send you a 25 second clip from the popular TV show, with the same TV soundtrack, but with animated visuals replacing the actors. It's an interesting approach, although I can't decide if it's a genius moment to re-master for a new medium, or another way of charging the fans more money for the same well worn punchlines.

Interesting idea, and I'm sure the animated figures will be much clearer than video on a phone screen, but 3 is way too much for a 25 second clip IMHO.

Good idea but.. 3 for 25 seconds worth of a clip? Is this some sort of joke? Thats 12p for every second.... rip off. Put a bit of effort in and you could simply rip a dvd you have of the series to your computer and convert what ever episodes you want. Granted its not 1click easy but beats the 3 for 25 seconds.

Well for 3 quid per show that is 8*6*3 = 144 quid. You can just as well buy the original shows only DVD's for less than 60 at Amazon. Rip'em to your phone and have the original super B quality. Clearly this is a fine example of eBay illness, where people buy stuff for tripple the shop price.

The other point is that as YouTube and similar services spread out into the mobile phone world, charging for clips is becoming increasingly unfeasible anyway.

Even the BBC itself gives away loads of free clips of Red Dwarf on YouTube.

It's not 3 per episode - it's a subscription service. If you would even visit the site you link to, you would see that.

From the Terms and Conditions on the site:

This is a subscription service. Each week you will receive an SMS with a link to the Red Dwarf wapsite where you can get your exclusive Red Dwarf mobisode, plus your choice of 5 Ringtones, Videos and Graphics. The service is charged at £3 per week or part thereof. Standard operator SMS/WAP/GPRS charges apply.

£3 per week, one episode a week; looks like £3 per episode to me...

it does look worth it, in my option. if you want tv episodes, buy them on dvd, rip them to your computer and then convert them to mobile formatt.

I already have the DVDs and have ripped most of the episodes to an SD card (Handbrake/DivX FTW!). So this is certainly not for me. You have to wonder tho - if the episodes were cheaper (eg. 25p) would they sell a few more?.

Also, these subscription services should be banned.

Don't most phones come with software for creating your own ring tones these days? I bought a basic Sony Ericsson for my mother and even that did so there's really little excuse for paying for the damn things.

ouch.. I dont know about you - but 3 quid is ridiculous.

Maybe it isnt too much money in the relative terms in the UK (for the rich Pommes).. but translating this to currency everywhere else can buy you a very decent meal (a nice piece of steak and fries with a drink or an equivalent meal in Asian countries).

Or more realistically.. 3 quid is about how much phone calls my wife uses in a fortnight and she talks a fair amount too..

but 3 quid for 25 seconds of sour outdated British humour? The DVD over here only cost the equivalent of 6 quid with 90 minutes of the same thing!

ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS..
