We could apply the same theory you've thrown at Phoenix in that just because you find it awkward and a complete waste of time and effort, it doesn't mean it is.
I wholly disagree and it personally irks me, when internet folk feel they can criticise something without even having tried it. I believe that is what Phoenix was getting at. If you've not tried the app, you cannot have an oppinnion about whether its of any use to you.
You are however quite right, you don't have to install anything if you don't want to. I just disagree with disregarding something without having tried it.
