Ewan's off round the world quite a bit, as you know. So what better way to keep him in touch with the world back home than a brand new Slingplayer Pro box, streaming his video and TV sources to his N95 wherever he roams? We packed him off to darkest RussiaXXXX err... Paris and Amsterdam in order to put Slingplayer Mobile through its paces and tell us whether it's worth buying .

Read on in the full article.

I think you need the pro version - I believe it comes with an build-in tuner to awoid the problems with 'locals' changing channels...

Michael

No, Ewan was reviewing the Pro version - and it's only an analogue tuner, which will become obsolete in the next year or so. AFAIK.

Be sure to report back next time your electricity bill comes in!!

Bodstrup, Steve is indeed right, the Pro has space to lop in an analouge ariel input - and of course you can have the TV tuner on the local TV and run a DVD player for yourself - but texting your wife and asking her to pop in "The Best of Neil Diamond" can put a strain n any long distance marriage!

I've been using this for a while now on my N73 and now N95 (the x-series three version which had no fullscreen mode, before the newer generic version which adds this vital feature!).

It never ceases to amaze friends/colleagues as a "wow" demo of what my phone can do 😉 I've got it hooked up to my Sky+ box, which it flawlessly controls so that I can watch any one of hundreds of channels, as well as any of my recorded programs (as well as setting things to record!).

It's the best piece of software on my phone without a doubt (well, maybe tied with TomTom 😛).

I am an American living in Finland. I just purchased the Slingbox Pro and set it up at my brother's house. I use both the S60 and Mac client. The only problem I have is the fluctuation in throughput (120-800Kbps) which can make the video jerky. On the Mac, I need +500Kbps to get decent video at full screen. I am not sure the throughput I get on N95 but it seems adequate for decent 320x240 video. I disagree with the article about how tricky the setup was. I know about all the technologies involved but it was simply plug-in-play in my case.

I wanted to test the video quality before I purchased a DVR to connect to the box. The one downside for me is the monthly service (Charter or Tivo) I need to get to use a DVR in USA. In Finland, you simply buy the box and plug it in.

Nice review!

I'll soon come up with the next episode of my Multimedia Bible series, of which I've just published (see http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/68414/#post356920 ) the audio-specific part, "The Radio Stream Transcoding Bible".

I'll discuss a lot of questions like optimizing bandwidth and video format for Symbian handsets so that you can have the best video watching experience. Stay tuned - I think all remote video streaming fans will love the article 😊

I am running the slingplayer on my N95-3, and my faviorites are cleared every time I exit the program or even stop and restart the slingbox. This is quite annoying; who want to reprogram their favorites every time they use the player. Is anyone else having this problem? Other than this annoyance, the player works great.

I think this is a fabulous program. I was a beta tester for the S60 version, and SlingMedia's beta team was tremendously responsive and helpful. I use it at home on my home-office PC and on the road on my Nokia E51 (in the U.S.). I have never had it remove my favorites after logging off, rebooting, etc., by the way. It has worked exactly as promised.

I was also a member of beta test team and have been using Slingplayer Mobile on my E90 for about 5 months and it works very well. The E90 is not officially support as of yet and there are a few small problems (it works on the inner screen but not the outer screen, full screen on the inner screen is not really full screen) but it does let me watch TV while I'm traveling. It works nearly flawlessly over Wifi and is very usable even over EDGE. If you travel a lot like I do, you just can't beat it.

Hiya

I was thinking of buying a slingbox too.
I'm on threeUK and have a Nokia N95 on the Xseries on the silver tarriff,
I also have a Threeuk usb modem for connecting my laptop to the internet wherever i am.

just a few questions please....

How much of my "download" usage will a one hour show use? (on pc modem)

Is it possible for both me and my husband to access the one slingbox at the same time? (obviously i would asume we would both have to watch the same channel)

having looked at the Slingbox site, it seems that you have to pay an annual charge, does the X-series gold include this software?
