When i press mine on my 8GB it goes to gallery but opens an image up as if ready to send etc It doesnt just go to thumbnails.
Is this normal?

I'm guessing it is. This happens on my N95-1 too.
Press once more and it should go to gallery view.
Is there a program to lock them seperately from the keypad?

It's not a Media shortcut key it is a shortcut Gallery key and as mentioned a single press opens the last picture in the Gallery and a second press opens the full Gallery view with all the thumbnails.
