FlipSilent beta 1.0...

33 replies · 6,524 views · Started 06 January 2008

Came across this little app I'd thought I'd share with everyone...

Not too sure how Samir feels about this app, as it seems to be a very close knockoff of his Shutup idea/concept. TBH dont even know who came up with the idea first... so will reserve judgment till then...

Still a bit of friendly competition between freeware developers cant hurt as long as appropriate acknowledgment is given... 😉

So kudos to Tong Ren of symbianblog.

see link for more details:

ut.

I'm sure Samir wasn't the first to think this was a good idea so it's not suprising someone else with the skills to make it also thought of it. I wouldn't assume it's a rip off necessarily.
As you say competition is always good for consumers/end users. I have emailed to request a copy so will let you know my thoughts.

I've requested a copy as well. Let's see what this Japanese-alternative-to-Samir is like 😉

yes it looks good

1, Flip Over
- silent profile: make your phone go to the silent profile
- Hang up Call: Hang up the call when a call is coming in
- Both: Do both mentioned above DEFAULT
2, Flip Back:
- previous profile: use the profile you used before DEFAULT
- Silent profile: remain in the silent profile
- Standard profile: use the standard profile
3, Auto Start
- No: start without the phone boot
- Yes: Start with the phone boot with the configuration interface
- YES & Hide: Start with phone boot, and goes into background

Hi all,

Wasn't this functionality first shown in the demonstration concept video for the Touch UI, so really neither of them invented it but have merely worked on delivering the functionality it demonstrated.

Marc

thnx for the program
i signed it and installed it
but when i try to open it nothing happens
did any 1 come across this problem?!

I signed and installed it fine. When I run the app and it gives me the options which I left as defaults.
I have just tested it and it works exactly as described, flip the phone over it kills the incoming call and switches to silent. Turn it back over and it changes to whatever profile was selected before.
It also works when there is no incoming call (phone is idle) and just switches to silent. I am going to test that a bit because I am concerned it may accidentally do that when in a pocket or bag.
Power-wise it doesn't cause any noticable spike in energy profiler when I start it or flip the phone so thats good.

It could be improved by allowing you to select which profile when flipping over and back (it only allows silent or general at the moment) and perhaps a shortcut to enable and disable it. There is a bug too so the silent only option in the settings doesn't work and it will still end the call.

By the way, the author has now changed his distribution method from email requests only to download (I'm guessing due to popularity). The unsigned version is downloadable here: http://symbianblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/flipsilent1.sis

yeah, its a tidy app...

seems to only flip between profiles at zero - 10 degrees and 170-180 degrees which should be spot on..

Yeah, I've just been playing with that and it does seem to only activate at the extremeties so it's ideal. If the settings bug is fixed and the profile selection and missd call logging are implemented it'll be pretty much perfect.

I've just drove down to the greasy cafe, phpne in pocket... and when I got back, took it out and put it on the desk and it reactivated the profile, so at some point its clearly gone to silent.

Im guessing that if its in the pocket and you sit, it goes to a pretty close to horizontal position... therefore possibly going to silent. I guess I'll have to make sure its face upp in the pocket?

I guess it's catch 22. It has to have some point at which it detects flippage so there is the inevitable possibility that it will 'fall' into that position. There isn't much you can do about that except have an activate/deactivate shortcut but if you remembered to do that, you would remember to switch to silent in the first place!

yeah... tis true.

Probably the easiest thing would be to be allowed to change the profiles it swaps between instead??

Dont get me wrong, Im not complaining... just making an observation whilst shoving a bacon sarnie down me throat. 😉

Could some one sign for me as Im abit of a noob when it comes to this.
Or if someone could tell me what to do.
Thanks

Talk about quick I had only just got around to installing version 1
great app hope he keeps up the good work

Nice to see he is updating in response to user comments and releasing those updates. Definately the quickest way to beta test and develop if you ask me

Thought I'd give my thoughts on this app now that I've used it in a real situation. This is based on v1.0 of the app. I don't know whether I'll upgrade to v1.1 because I like the idea that it hangs up an incoming call and puts the phone in silent at the same time.

I work in a call centre, and when I go in I often put my phone into silent so that I can send/receive important texts when I'm at work without distracting anyone. I normally have the phone flat on my desk near my computer. Today, I had FlipSilent running and all I did was turn the phone over. When it came to my break, all I had to do was pick it up and it wasn't in silent anymore (so I can hear the phone ring when I'm in the busy café at work).

When I heard about Samir's ShutUp, I didn't think it was that intuitive but now FlipSilent is out, I've found I was wrong. It's one less thing I have to remember to do (switching between General and Silent at work). Also, since it only changes back to General when the phone is flat on it's back, I can happily pick it up to check for messages and reply to them if necessary. It doesn't change back to the General profile because when I use my phone I always hold it at an angle.

There was only one problem, and that was that I could hear my phone beep a few times indicating that it had changed profiles while it was still face down on the table. I couldn't understand why it was doing it. Has anyone else experienced that? :con?

zxon, the situation you describe (forgetting to switch to silent) would be remedied by using handy profile or best profiles. I do that so it auto switches to silent when i am in the cell areas that cover my office.

It is handy for somewhere less regular like out for a meal or a quiet place like a library of funeral.

Incidentally, the new version (1.1) always switches to silent, the option now is what it should ALSO do, reject call or mute ringer

Thanks 3Shirts. I'd considered that but it would also mean that my phone is on silent when I'm in the caf at break. I work in a 18-storey building and the caf is in the same building. Also my office is in the centre of town, and I suppose the cell area would cover most of the town. My phone would go to silent whenever I go shopping

3Shirts wrote:Incidentally, the new version (1.1) always switches to silent, the option now is what it should ALSO do, reject call or mute ringer

Ahh that's good to know. So you either have the choice to hang up the call there and then, or just let it ring silently. I might upgrade anyway then :icon14:

Great application!

For a contribution of $ 1.99 a signed version
was received within a half hour, with the pro-
mise that I also would receive updates!

How good is this 😉

Keep up the good work..

The app has now been updated to v1.02

"V1.02 Major improvements:

1, Save Battery Power: you can activate the sensor when a call coming in!
2, Full control of switch between profiles, both flip over and flip back!"

I've upgraded and I've reported a bug to the author and a couple of suggestions:

  • When the power save option is selected, the phone doesn't switch back to the previous profile when it's flipped back over (screen facing up).
  • The power save option kicks in when a call comes in, but not a text message. Suggested that this be a feature in the future.
  • Suggested that the sensitivity of the app be decreased. The slightest knock of my phone on my desk causes it to beep and change profiles.

I am currently running the alpha of v1.03 and have to say it has improved a lot and has the addition of alarm handling. It can be set to only activate when a call comes in or alarm goes off and you can set what behaviour it has. This is broken down into:

FlipOver Profile - What profile if you flip it over, regardless of calls, alarms etc.
FlipOver Call - What to do if a call is coming in and you flip, either silence ringer or end call
FlipOver Alarm - Snooze or turn off the alarm.

It still doesn't seem to hide correctly for me but that may be to do with Handy Taskman. I don't know if it hides from the built-in task manager

Ditto, it doesn't hide from the task manager for me either. Another alpha/beta is meant to be sent out to us later today.

Hi guys
I installed differents version of flipsilent in my N95 ( 1.02 and 1.03 ) in both cases I signed the application following the method described in this forum ( I've done the same for other applications and worked fine). The installation running fine. ( no errors with the certificate) However I'm not able to configure it. Every time I try to do it opening the application it doesn't work It seems like it trying to open a new window but...
I don't know what exactly I'm doing wrong
Thx

install it into phone memory insted of memory card / mass memory

thx martin-f you were right, once the app is installed on the phone memory it is working fine

Can a mod take the download link down, the developer has specifically requested "Please do not distribute to 3rd parties (I want stable public downloads)"
