Nokia N73 - taking silent pictures?

10 replies · 10,288 views · Started 08 January 2008

Hello,
I got a Nokia n73 and I plan to shoot many pictures with it. My question is can I somehow turn off the annoying capture sound that you hear when you take a picture? How stupid of Nokia not to make a sound off option. Smetimes I just don't want everybody to know that I make a picture!!!!!!!!
Is there a firmware update solution or anything?
Thanks.

The camera sound and the red led light for the video recording are both privacy protection devices, designed to notify others that they may be filmed/videoed. Given that this is in many places e.g. Japan, a legal requirement I don't think there'll be an offical rom update to allow the user to disable these.

There are of course various hacks to disable this, though I have not seen one here in this forum yet. There is one on the web to disable the video led light which involved opening the phone up and disabling a PCB track leading to the led light.....

If you go tools - profiles (highlight the profile your using)- options - personalise - warning tones and turn them off. That turns off the focusing beep and the shutter sound.

it was one of the first things i tried. it doesn't work in n73. warning sounds are off (all other sounds are off too) but shutter click is still on... i have the US edition.

I just tried disabling the warning tones under my general profile and the camera sounds went away. I have the South African Vodafone firmware, v3.xx (yes i still need to upgrade to v4...).

I usually just quickly put the phone in silent mode if I'm going to take a lot of pictures. (btw holding # key is shortcut for silent mode).

ok I have the US edition and my firmware version is v 4.0726.2.1.1

can you recommend a different version that will not change my basic features but will take care of shutter sound?

I've had two n73's.

one asian with european firmware (no noise)

one american with american firmware (beep)

I guess if you really want a silent camera, change your product code and firmware. I would do it but i've already set up my applications.
