There's a fabulously interesting article over at Unwired View, where the author's got hold of the probable tech details of Nokia's multi-touch system, to be seen this year. Even more interestingly, the article goes on to describe a Nokia patent for a touch-less, ultrasonics-based 3D control system. 2008's shaping up to be quite a year!
Read on in the full article.
Very interesting article. I hope this actually gets implemented. It would be fun to have devices like these, expecially the touchless ones. I can just imagine a situation when the 1st touchless devices come out, and you are out in public interacting with it. Am sure the people that will see you move fingers in the air around your device will think you are some kind of cuckoo... 😊
Many of the hand gestures mentioned in the article are similar to the iphone though.
This has to be a joke. Nobody would use it. Just pure engineering joke -- or the engineers are the joke, if they are serious...
"Damnit Beavis!" - I thought of that 3D system all by myself not long ago (pats self on back). Sadly I didn't have the finances to patent it 😊
Anyway, it's an obvious step on from multitouch. Simply, 2D to 3D. Makes sense. The other way of doing it of course is with a Playstation Eyetoy type arrangement, but translating gestures into 3D. There are various research papers around on the net that deal with the basics of 2D to 3D gesture recognition. Still, ultrasonics sounds better and more reliable. Good stuff.
Remember Nokia also have an advanced force feedback or haptics system on the way. http://www.redferret.net/?p=9533
Nice.
I notice they omitted the gesture that you make when software crashes, I believe it looks much like "giving the bird"...

Ha Ha Leave to Nokia to make even touch screen hard and complicated. its been 7 months since the iPhone came out and they're still working on it. The iPhone is pure genius, believe me its not that easy.
Heh, and maybe one could type very fast by using the 'deaf language' ?
A flick of a wrist and a word is there. Surely here we're talking the next gen of this, as 3-point tracking will not be enough.
3G videocalls and this would make life much better for the deaf.
