Windows Live Messenger No Longer Free ?

47 replies · 20,389 views · Started 09 January 2008

I've been using the Windows Live Messenger App on the N95 for some months now and it's always been free. When I went to login today it popped up with a message telling me that me my 30 day trial would now begin. Has there been an announcement stating this change was coming, any idea on cost ?

Does anyone know of a free alternative app that allows you to connect ?

Hi there, I have not seen this message as I have been unable to connect with windows Live Messenger on my N95 for weeks. I just get told to try again. Therefore I have trialled many of the alternative IM products. There are loads of them (free or paid for) but the best I found was ebuddy (you can guess the web address!) which is completely free and supports WLM very well.

Hope this helps!

Fring is a good alternative. If you use skype, google talk, aim etc as well it will handle all in one app. Very nice

Thanks, had a quick look at that one and it looks nice but is web based. I liked the fact that WLM could run all day in the background on the phone and gave me a messenger sound/symbol when someone had contacted me. Are all the alternative apps web based or is there likely to be something offering similar functionality ?

Fring sounds ideal for you mate. It can run silently and automatically connect to hotspots or remain online with 3G if you want. You can set it to ring or vibrate (or both or neither) when a message comes in and can even customise the alert tones

Slick is pretty cool, and free at the moment

http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick

loads of features, works really well, but they will start charging at some point

This is something that was in the setup when I installed it. It said that , at that moment, it was free but they may decide to start charging in the future but will give you 30 days notice...

When I was at Nokia world, I quizzed the woman displaying the Live! services and she denied it would be a fee based service...

I too tho, logging in now, have the message:

'Hello! Starting today, your 30 day trial begins. By selecting OK you acknowledge that your use of Windows Live services continues to be subject to the Terms aof Use and Privact Statement. Data Charges from your mobile operator, including roaming fees may apply for using Windows Live services. At the conclusion of this trial, you will be given the option to purchase a 30 day pass.

So... she was either talking crap... or didnt know... or maybe both.

Fring is definately the best alternative for me. Have been with the Fring guys since the beginning and can mostly recommend it. Its a free service at the moment, but I wouldnt be surprised if that too went to a pay service at some point.

Look again - it isn't just web based, there is a client to download to your phone. Thats it - start the client, hide it and it will wake up if anyone contacts you.

Another alternative is to use the built in IM application with a 3rd party source of MSN such as packetbox or the one I use - yamigo. Instructions are on the site(s) or search in google..

I went for these solutions as they do exactly what I need - MSN messenger - no more, no less! and are both free - choose one and see what you think, there is nothing lost.

Thanks folks, appreciate all the replies. Having a play with Fring at the moment and it's not bad at all. Liking the autostart feature.

Do any of these have the ability to send a file/picture from the phone ?

I just logged in, and got the message that my 30 day trial would now begin, after which I would be given the option to purchase a 30 day pass, as if Microsoft don't hae enough money, they will be trying to charge us for the PC based version next greedy b*******

Cheers again, problem here is that my phone's browser defaults to the mobile version of the ebuddy home page which just presents you with the login screen and no way to download the client. I'll have to wait until I get home and download it, unless anyone can put me out of my misery and tell me how to stop the phone from defaulting to the mobile version.

Guys i am still not getting the message that it is becoming a fee based service..?

How are you lot connecting to windows live on your n95.....?

I am connecting via wi-fi , and it has not told me that my trial has started yet :con?

The connection type would not any difference, as the message is from windows live, but as you asked I used wifi.
have to wait and see what happens in 30 days

I just try it now, no message ! , log off and login again and still no message yet , I'm using windows live version 1.0.6141 , what version are you using ?

i am using version 1.1.8161 and no message, got it from the download section in my n95

If you download Live messenger it is a 30 day trial and at the end of your 30 days it will notify you that it is no longer a free service. That was the main reason why I never installed it on my n95.

If you log in through mobile.msn.com on your handset then you are not installing the user software and that does not expire (as far as I know).

ive had the app on my phone for a couple of months easily now, so that cant be the case mate

Here is a good article to check out: blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1127

here is the prompt you get:

"Hello! Starting today, your 30 day trial period begins. By selecting OK you acknowledge that your use of Windows Live services continues to be subject to the Terms of Use and Privacy Statement. Data charges from your mobile operator, including roaming fees may apply for using the Windows Live services. Still playing. Fring was very nice, but once you've minimised it for a little while, it locks up and you can't open it up so I have to restart the phone.

Ebuddy I've got now, quite nice but you have to select your connection type 3 times before you can actually get in ! It minimises successfully sometimes, and othertimes does a nice silent N95 crash.

Perhaps I'm a little fussy, but WLM seemed a lot more stable !

yeah, msn only seems to drop its bomb on you after youve been using it for a while.... which may be why your not getting told about it yet...

I'm using it for more than 6 months , 5 days a week , and didn't get any message!

Same message for me. I've ditched it now cos fring does everthing I want anyway and integrates skype and google talk too

I just logged in to see - same message, got rid of it now, didn't really use it anyway.

BTW its the operators pushing this rather than Nokia or Microsoft. They want more revenue...

Mine is still not asking, but when it does i wont be paying for it, its more of a perk to have it on my phone than a necessity.
