Use my phone as a skype 'headset'?

Doesn't the application IM+ Skype allow you to make Skype calls anyway? So why bother hooking up to the PC. I've used it to send Skype messages and it has a call option (greyed out in my case as I have no skype credit) but I'm sure it can do it. Their web page says "call other skype users" so I'd imagine if you connect your N95 to the WiFi of your home you'd be able to do it.

Fring also lets you make Skype calls.

That's one of the great things about the N95, you don't need to switch on your computer AT ALL for Skype calls! 😉

Actually, I've looked into this more and Fring seems to be the better option. IM+ Skype will make calls to your Skype contacts but uses your GSM carrier for better quality than voip (ha, not where I live!!), so you end up paying for the call at Skype out rates. Sort of defeats the purpose of Skype.

I'm going to install Fring now and give that a whirl.

Yeah I had IM+ but ditched it for this exact reason. I have fring now anyway but I don't want to leave that connected all the time wheras the PC version obviously is. If I get a call on my PC I can't open and connect fring to take it cos it would take too long and I think it'd kill the call anyway. If I culd just click answer and grab my phone it'd be really handy.

It seems like it should support it, but I think I am missing something

1. If fring is connected, what does skype show as your status? Does it show you as online? I can't see any option in fring to change status.
2. Why don't you want to leave fring connected all the time? He your at home and connected to your good network, what's the problem?
3. Not really a question but if you get a call, you could message back and say you'll ring back in a sec.

1. I'm not sure, I will ask one of my contacts next time someone is online
2. It's not so much at home but at work where I don't have wifi but do have bluetooth.
3. I could, but it's not so much a practicality thing as just wanting to satisfy myself as to if it's possible

where is this option to set the n95 as a headset, as i would love to try this on my ps3.

I connected the phone (as I do anyway) and it is paired and authorised. I set the Headset AG service on so my phone appears in the Audio tab of the bluetooth settings app but when I click connect, it does so for a few seconds then automatically discnnects again. No error or anything

I would like to use my N95 also as an audio extension. Listen to my laptop sound on my N95 headsites, while being able to receive incoming phone calls without switching headsets. Is that possible?

I think your question is slightly different to mine mate. I want to know if I can connect to my PC is headset mode and therefore use the phone as a microphone and speaker on skype. I think what you are wanting it to have a headset that connects to you PC AND phone at the same time allowing you to listen to the PC until a call comes in on the phone.
If I am right, that isn't possible as headsets can only connect to one device at a time

I want the same thing too.. as i use my laptop quite a bit and would just like to use the n95 as a very covenient and "non-wierd looking" bluetooth headset fr the pc. It would mean that whatever voip program eg skype i ran on the laptop i could use relatively seamlessly- i find that using wifi on the nokia really hammers through the batteries anyway and the symbian app is not always as smooth as e.g. skype...

taking into account what brjhaverkamp said, it would be nice if there was an s60 app that could make available the headset audio gateway profile, and manage the connection, e.g. allowing a "call waiting" tone to come through if a regular cellphone call comes through.

here are the benefits of the app, if only it existed:

* 1 less device for roadwarriors to carry
* less battery use for the phone compared to wifi
* allow you to use voip at your laptop without looking funny with your fancy bluetooth headset
* allows you to use the phone in a lot of situations as a voip client without requiring specialised s60 software

it's in version 1.0, released on 28 march 2008.

it doesn't actually offer the bluetooth audio gateway profile, in fact it's a application that comes in two parts. a windows part and a s60 part.

It could very well meet my needs, I remember seeing a similar application previously. However even though it is version 1.0 there are very few comments in the forum, as it seems new?

Someone was complaining that it just produced garbled sound. Worth checking.

There is a new application -- Mobiola Headset for Skype which allows to use phone as headset for skype but also has Skype interface on phone side so you can accept and place calls right from the phone. http://www.warelex.com/phone-as-headset-for-skype/. Developer claims that WiFi enabled version is in works.

you can use your phone if it supports a2dp which i think it does.

if your bluetooth driver on your computer also supports a2dp then your phone shudd show up in audio devices and you can route your audio and mic through your phone

if your computer's bluetooth driver doesn't support a2dp or you dont know, download and install widcomm

Yes, You can use your headset as Skype headset. You have to just install it in your phone and then you can access your skype account from your phone.
