N95 beginner few silly questions..

17 replies · 16,871 views · Started 10 January 2008

Sorry about these simple questions..

1. Is there any easy way to find my mobile number on the phone

2. I noticed there are quite a few apps which are signed and unsigned. Do most people gte the signed ones through donations etc or do a lot of people use the unsigne apps. Seems quite a job to get these working on a N95

3. ..and finally.. what is the real point of 'unbranding' an N95.. my current version is v12.0.013

Thanks

1. go to "contacts", click "options" using the left keypad shortcut, go to "sim contacts" and then "sim directory", then "options" again, then "my numbers" lol - your number appears there... takes a bit of digging but its there.

2. i have a mix of signed and unsigned apps on mine - signed ones are usually commercial apps and the unsigned ones are usually developed either by an individual or organisation who havent signed them. i think its fine to install unsigned apps if u are certain they came from a good source.. to name an example. I have AmazeGPS which is free sat nav- their software is unsigned but its got a large community and quite a big name (i think) so its safe.

3. my idea of unbranding is the removal of operator specific firmware from the phone so you can get the latest firmware as soon as it becomes available. i think operators like to verify firmwares before they make them available (for bugs I should imagine) but I'm not entirely sure. I dont think the N95 comes with any "Visual" branding so its up to you really i think its just a firmware thing. I have a sim free version so mines unbranded - im just going on past experience of unbranding phones...

good luck!

does this work if you port your number from another network?

1. You rock, I've exchanged quite a few colorful emails with Nokia over the whole 'show my own number' thing.

They told me it was not possible on the N95 or N80.

The easiest way to view your number, is type *#100# and press the green call button.

Request not supported by network 😞

Unfortunately it's the convoluted way for me - though I also stuck my own number in as a contact - I've had the same number for about 4 years now, why I haven't learned it yet I'll never know.

Hmmm maybe is just a Vodafone thing then.

If I go into 'My numbers' it says 'No data'...

yeah, I think it is a voda thing... though other carriers have their own requests.. some have #NUM#call I think, though that could be a US one?

Thanks to everyone for the Answers. I'm still not clear as to whether there is any real gain in 'unbranding'. As for the unsigned apps is there a clear guide somehow as to how to run them on an N95. I loaded rotate me down and it said something like missing certificate?

Thanks

ive never come across the hole signed unsigned thing with software although i have the 8gb if that makes a difference?

Have you made sure you can allow ALL software?

Go to "Menu" -> "Applications" -> "App Mgr"

Then click the "Options" menu button and click "Settings"

Make sure "Software Installation" is on "All"

and "Online Certificate Check" is set to "Off"

Maybe that is stopping you from installing?

With regards to My numbers - im on orange so yeah it probably is a voda thing stopping u!

just checked my phone, unbranded v20 on 02 and it says no data. and the *#100# didn't work either

I guess you can always phone someone else's mobile and get the number 😉

Neither worked for me either. Operator: Three in Sweden. N95-1.

my phone is..
n95-3 finland
code:0556551110702rb25
rm-160..
should i unbrand it?? change the code?? or something??

Well, when I first got my N95-1 it was v10 FW.So once the v20 FW came out and I did some research on it.I decided to unbrand and I'm happy that I did.The phone was awesome to start, but now it OWNS ALL!lol.I only wish that they release v21 or whatever the next version will be so I can watch YouTube videos on the website.EmTube is cool, but being able to use the actual web page would be amazing!Fingers crossed.

yeah trust me, you definitely absolutely want to unbrand your phone. its infinitely better, faster, cleaner, usually more ram/memory. and right now the unbranded n95 firmware has many advanced things that your branded firmware does not. like demand paging, super fast camera, and other things. always go unbranded.
