This thread included a poll: Poll: Will you pay for Windows Live Messenger

As the thread says, with the news WLM is becoming a subscription service , will you be continuing to use it, looks like it is going to be 2 Euro's a month to use it ?

I will not be using it any more as i think its ridiculous to charge for something that is free on the Internet, and looks to be staying free on Windows mobile, what are your thoughts.

i would gladly send microsoft photos of me uninstalling it from my N95 - smiling every step of the way; with the end photo being a glorious shot of my extended middle finger, swaying from left to right.

i think it's ridiculous to charge a subscription for msn on a mobile - at the most charge a (small) fee for the software but not to use it when it doesn't cost them anything else. robbing gits.

I suspect they sorely underestimated how many people will go elsewhere if they start charging.

I think the thing that has made them unhappy is the influx of wi-fi enabled phones , people being able to get on the service while out and about for free, maybe mobile operators have had an influence ?, I don't know im just speculating. It just seems like a stupid move by Micro$oft.

THE best post I have seen today... cheers! 😊 Nowt like smiling when you got man flu at work.

No idea though why they think they can start charging.... theres so many other apps out there you would have thought they'd want to keep that market to themselves, not alientate their users...

Most importantly, there are free alternatives that offer just as much, or more (e.g. Fring or Palringo), at least as far as the messenger part goes.

Will they be charging for the hotmail/contacts access too, or will that remain free?

Fring is free for now... they have never hidden away from the fact that they 'may' start charging, but at present... as you know.... dont/

They may have a hard time if they do as their web site proudly displays in many places that it is a free service, with free calls and you will never receive an invoice from them.

Thing is (and don't tell them) I'd be willing to pay for fring if it did become a chargable service (price point notwithstanding) but Microsoft can whistle in the wind for any money from me.

Even if fring start charging and I decide not to pay, there are stacks of alternatives to Microsofts own Live Messenger and there will always be a free one somewhere.

Must admit, in the one day I've been using Fring I'm bowled away by it. Agile and IM+ have been relegated to "previously bought but no longer required" status. Thankfully I was only "trying" Agile on the 4 for three months option, so not too much wasted. IM+, well, live and learn. Fring, it's fringing free. Fring it on.

2 euro/months is a lot for something that should be free. It's not like that in my country. Here it is... 4 euros 😞

Half the tech world are developing new possibilities. The other half is trying to block them and then charge you to reopen.

Aren't greed great?

I've just looked at this thread and noticed that not a single person has voted yes for paying for MSN Messenger! LOL

Micro$oft... make the right choice...

Its bang out of order that they are charging. I thought they might stat hence why i uninstalled it after it nearly bricked my n95 8gb!!

Why should they charge when a more complex program is avialable for free for PCs??

If people pay they wil do it though. I also think it is wrong that you should have to pay for wi fi while at hotspots!!

Its only a matter of time that you will be able to install PC programs on phones anyway or ways of using the pc program on your phone, then what will you do microsoft!! ****holes.

lol !!!

i have noticed that with alternatives, fring at least anyway you can not block contacts or if they are all readu blocked on live mesenger the appear un-blocked on fring, does anyone know if there is an alternative that allows you to block contacts?

so come on then... who said they 'would' pay for it??

Or did someone just click it for a laff?!

i said yes but i though it would be a 1 off charge but as i cant find another client that will allow contacts to be blocked then i will pay for it

Use your web browser on your mobile and go to http://live.mobile.com

Exactly the same functionality without even installing a client and still gratis.

M$ really p*ssed me off with this charging lark. Expecially as its only Symbian users being billed. WM devices remain free.

maybe symbian and windows fell out then! it must just be the fact that bill gates can see a profit and will let his windows users have the app for free. what is the costs exactly cause i still use it

That would be completely illegal. You cannot charge for an app on one OS and not another. However, they have a shocking track record for legal cases like this at Microsoft so will probably manage to argue that it's different enough to count as a different application
