Does GPS (Satnav) use Internet?

15 replies · 8,344 views · Started 10 January 2008

Hi,

This is a pretty easy question to those with a N95.

Does the N95 or 8gb model need internet to use GPS? For example, If I was to purchase a monthly contract from O2 with no internet usage policy. After using the GPS, would I recieve a large bill at the end of the month from downloading GPS information?

Thank you

If you turn off A-gps and don't allow it to use a network connection, on the pre-installed nokia gps software, then no, you won't have any data charges. Use Nokia map loader through a pc connection to load on maps of your area or maps of the area that you want.

I would add that you really should consider an unlimted data plan. Even if you don't think you'd use it much, once you start realising the potential of the phone, it's awesome

I'd also recmmend avoiding O2, but that's just my bitter opinion

I'd have to agree with 3shirts.
I'm with rogers in canada and their plans are overly expensive so I just use wlan at home and at work (the two places i'm at the most), and it's surprising how much I use the wlan on my phone and would love to be able to use it outside of those two places on the 3g network.

Thank you for the very quick replys. I only mentioned O2 due to them being on the top of my head.

Can anyone suggest a better service provider? It appears only T-Mobile, Vodafone and Three have "unlimited plans". The problem is T-Mobile has the N95 when i prefer the 8gb, Three's contract is £37 a month which is far too much and Vodafone's "unlimited" contract supplied 120mb a month.

Would I get through 120mb a month using only the GPS and just checking emails ect? (No youtube or downloading).

Do you currently own an N95?

I couldn't tell you how much data you would use because I don't know how many emails you get or the variety of attachments etc. or how much you would use the internet.

I do not currently own a N95 unfortunatly. In terms of emails, I mean just checking hotmail every now and then ect.

Is there any program on the N95 that tells you how much MB you have used on the internet?

Thank you

Its better than Orange's "unlimted" plan, limited to 30mb per month.....🙄

If not downloading maps "on the go" and just checking emails, 120mb should be fine. The N95 has a built in data counter, you will just need to remember to reset it eahc month
😊

In terms of the GPS i am planning to either download the maps from the computer or I might try using TomTom or Garmin XT.

Will A-GPS or the alternative GPS programs exceed 120mb a month?

Thank you for all your help so far

A-GPS only uses a couple of Kb each time you fire up the GPA from what I remember, so 'naff all squared' in reality.... You can turn it off if you want anyway

120mb is plenty. I am on T-Mobile and I use mine loads for sat nav (maps on the fly), downloading podcasts (including video), browsing, uploading photos etc. I rarely get through more than 150mb a month.
If you are only doing occasionaly browsing, email and agps you will probably only be using 10mb tops. Once you get into it though, you will start finding loads of awsome online apps. Check the logs occasionally and you will see what packet data you have sent and received, so you can keep an eye on it if you are worried.

Incidentally, A-GPS is the phones way of connecting to satellites, it makes no difference which sat-nav software you use.

Thats great, thank you for all your help. I just need to decide between the N95 8GB and the Nokia 6110 Navigator. One last question, would I get a better deal buying online or inside a vodafone store?

Thank you (and once again for the very fast responses)

Almost always online. I very much doubt you will get a better one instore.

If you want to ask any questions about the navigator, let me know.

Oh, do you have both?

Is there many functions missing on the Navigator to the N95 8gb? And would you say that the N95 sat nav is really terrible in comparison?

Sorry for all the questions.

do what i did and add your maps with map loader. Faster than downloading them on the go...

I have a 6110, but I have seen and used a N95 8GB.

As to whats different, camera (only 2mp compared to 5mp), no accelerometer, no wifi, and not such a large screen. Although IMO, the navigator looks better, and certainly feels a lot more robust.

The N95 (both versions) do not have any satnav software. Nokia maps is installed, and you can download the maps for free, but you have to pay for turn by turn and voice guidance.

With the 6110, you get route66 with whatever maps you need (i.e. if you buy from the UK, you get Uk and Ireland maps). You can buy any other maps from the route66 store.

I like route66, but I feel it has problems, so much so Ive bought other satnav software. But I seem to be picky, so dont let that put you off.

The 6110 and N95s can both have any symbian satnav software bought and installed for them. Theres navigon, route66 (you can buy it seperatly for the N95), navicore, garmin and others. Unfortunatly tomtom doesnt work with the internal GPS on any symbian phones, so unless you want to buy a seperate bluetooth reciever, you have to avoid it for now.

If satnav is important to you, its worth noting the 6110 has a very good nokia car holder (although pricy). It clicks in and theres a quick release. It also negates the need to plug in a cable each time.
