The N73 gets a speed bump

24 replies · 6,161 views · Started 13 January 2008

We seem to have missed that the big-selling Nokia N73 ME got a new firmware upgrade a few days ago. The new version is 4.0750.31.2.1 and reportedly makes the device a lot snappier. Hmm... I don't think Demand Paging is implemented here, but comments welcome from N73 owners - anyone care to back up, update via NSU and restore in the interests of experimentation?

Read on in the full article.

Uh, demand paging would be a killer feature!
I also hope that the good old N80 will also have a firmware update to enjoy higher speed. 😉

Oh yes! I've been looking for the change log for a week now.. Someone please do it.
Also, apparently the firmware hasnt been released everywhere. Currently, its only released in APAC regions (asia) which i've noticed doesnt include India.

Alright! Symbian-Freak is reporting that N73me has actually & finally got Demand Paging ! And also should be available in all regions. Awesome Nokia !

omg, now they needa put it on the old flagship model n80 too or many people will be seriously pissed!

I decided to upgrade my normal N73 with firmware V 4.0735.3.0.2,
to N73ME V 4.0735.3.0.2 as the upgrade was not yet available to normal N73.
Personally I don't recommend you to do this but to me everything worked without a problem.
I used "Nemesis Service Suite" to change my phone's product code
from scandinavia to euro music edition and then simply used
Nokia Software Updater to update the firmware.
Off course I backed up all the data I had on the device and then restored it.
The phone seams to be the same and the most noticeable difference is that
now the multimedia key is replaced by music key which takes to directly to the player.
I don't know if I can post any links here how to do what I did but I'm happy to answer
any questions. Just be sure that by doing this you loose the warranty of the phone.
To me the phone doesn't really seam much faster than it was.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the last minute "issues" (ie problems) Nokia have been having with the Next Gen N-Gage platform.

Perhaps this firmware update is intended to help fix the platform's problems?

Hey Steve! I've updated to the latest firmware recently and have definitely noted the much, much-improved memory-handling capabilities -- infact, I was pleasantly surprised to see Demand Paging being mentioned over at Symbian Freak.

I've listed many of the changes/improvements over at my blog...here's a quick run-down for everyone -- apart from a greater amount of free RAM available for apps, loading times for various elements, such as the Menu, Contacts or even when opening random Folders have dramatically improved. As a result, Menu navigation -- which was previously unbearable and horribly lethargic, is now a breeze!

According to some other people who have upgraded, Camera performance under night-mode has improved too and the blue-haze issue is less of a problem now. I haven't confirmed this yet though.

Krisse's theory seems quite plausible. With the previous firmware, v4.0736.3.2.1, with typical use the amount of free RAM available for apps used to hover around 10-11MB. Remarkably, that figure has shot upto 12.5-13MB with the upgrade. So, they really have done wonders with the new firmware.

"So, they really have done wonders with the new firmware"

Oh come on you mean they've finally got the code right, it only like took them YEARS!

Still I don't want to sound negative. The Symbian S60 platform is getting better and better and it's great to see all these phones getting updates that address the issues people have been having. I wish they'd do an E60 update too, it's not been updated for ages.

If N93 gets demand paging and/or better code, why leave E60, E61 & E70 owners high & dry.
We suffer from the same issues...lack of RAM, slowish interface even slower JVM.

A also hope they will release new firmware for E61 users, latest is about year and half old:/

What about an update for the N93? Nokia seem to have forgotten this model and it's users.

Forget it. Its not happening. My fingers have gone numb from posting comments on forums for an update on the n93, but nothing has come in over a year now. The last update was v20 somewhere back in Dec 2006. If nothing has come in a year, do you really expect one to come now. I am a frustated n93 owner too, but have given up hope.

n93 does not exist for Nokia anymore. Nor do its customers.

For some reason I think the E61i got paging with the last (and only, so far) update. Memory management seems to be much better than before. Using the built-in browser with about 4-5 other apps in the background didn't result in a memory low message, nor in the other apps being closed, and the free memory stayed pretty much above 4.5MB.

To be precise (as I wrote wrong) the firmware changed from
N73 V 4.0735.3.0.2 to
N73ME 4.0750.31.2.1
As Taha M was saying I about the blue-haze issue of the camera..
I think it's a little bit better than before.
Besides the speed and the camera the phone software is
almost identical to the normal N73 firmware.

ps: I still have to check if it's possible to "downgrade" from
N73ME to N73 by changing the phone product code and using
Nokia Software Updater.

First off +1 on the N80 too!

Secondly, while this sounds like a great FW update I'd be very surprised if it is really demand paging. If it were I'd expect a bigger RAM increase than ~2 megs. Besides, N70, N80, N93, E61i and all other devices people are talking about here are S60 3.0 / Symbian 9.1. So far, demand paging has only appeared in S60 3.1 / Symbian 9.2 devices. Porting it to an older version of the OS probably isn't as easy as people make out.

Yep. Which is why I was dubious about demand paging etc. There's also the 'more RAM with a clean install' syndrome, whereby EVERY device feels faster and has more RAM straight after a wipe and rebuild of disk C etc. 8-)

And yes, re: N93, I do keep checking my own device each month, to no avail. A great shame, as it's still, potentially, Nokia's flagship.

I agree with cirrus. While it may not be demand paging and just some code optimizations instead, an increase of about 2MB still is a LOT for a device that was plagued with innumerable 'Out of Memory' errors and stability issues.

Steve, in the tests that I've done, I did take that factor into account and installed every application I had prior to the upgrade before conducting the test in order to get as close to ensuring an identical environment as possible.

On a side note, I haven't rebooted in days (another first for Nokia) 😮

Symbian freak is a questionable source of reliable information taking their competence into account. Of course there is NO ODP in N73 and if you've got a slightest clue what is it all about you should know why it is not there.

Quite apart from anything else the hardware architecture of the N73 makes demand paging very unlikely if not impossible (I'm not an expert here). Very nice to see Nokia continue to update handsets though.

In numbers terms it makes more sense to update the N73 (way more users). Doesn't meant it would be good to update the N93 too of course!
