E-Mail Settings Aren't Logical?

Nokia E51 - certainly the best phone I've ever owned. However, it does have some issues, one of which I was hoping was just my (lack of) understanding about how it's supposed to work...

If you go to Messaging -> Options -> Settings -> E-mail and pick a POP or IMAP profile you've previously setup and go to "Automatic retrieval" there are two, mutually exclusive options "E-mail notifications" and "E-mail retrieval." You can only pick one or the other (on my T-Mobile E51 anyway) provided that the other option is DISABLED. The options for "E-mail notifications" are "Auto-update", "Only in home netw." and "Disabled" and the options for "E-mail retrieval" are "Enabled", "Only in home netw." and "Disabled."

If I enable "E-mail notifications" because I want to be notified when I get an e-mail and then, logically, try to enable "Auto-Retrieval" I get an error "E-mail notifications setting must be disabled to enable e-mail retrieval settings!" Surely I want auto-retrieval on (so the E51 gets my e-mail periodically) AND e-mail notification on so I get notified when new e-mail is received?

These settings obviously don't do what I think they do?

"Auto-retrieval" had to be enabled in order to select how often you want the phone to auto-retrieve e-mail so if you have it disabled and it's not auto-retrieving e-mail then surely you don't need e-mail notification, 'cos you won't be receiving any new e-mails!?!?!

Incidentally, what exactly IS the "home network?" How is this defined? I've taken it to mean my home WiFi connection but how does the phone decide what the home network is? I can't find an explicit setting for this?

Thanks for listening.

Home network is the network you choose in "Connection settings">"Incoming email" (i don't have english menu - hope you understand)

If setting "auto-retrieve" is on you cannot choose "ask every time" but have to choose the name of the network you want to be connected to all the time.

Hope this makes sense.

If "Email notifications" is on, it will not download the full email, just the header. The other option always download the whole mail. Thats why you can choose only one...
