Deleting recent recipients in SMS

Is it possible to remove the contacts in the list that appears when you tap the "To:" field when creating a new sms message?

I haven't found a way through this, but I've noticed it gets cleared 24 hours odd after sending the message to that specific person whose name is on the "To:" field.
