Hi guys... I have just installed garmin on my n95 8 gig but cant seem to get a gps signal at all !!!! all i keep getting is " awaiting better gps accuracy "
Plus when i try nokia maps not much happens there either... i just get an orange ball flash at the bottom right below a satelite...
is there some settings i need to configure or even calibrate the internal unit...
1. Go into settings - phone settings - general - positioning.
2. Under 'positioning methods' check that both 'Assisted GPS' and 'Integrated GPS' are ticked. And not the others.
3. In 'Positioning server' make sure the access point is properly setup, it should display your networks access method (vodafone internet, etc etc).
In 'server address' make sure its supl.nokia.com, exactly that, no www or anything.
4. go into the setup of whatever software your using (Garmin, nokia maps etc) and make sure its the internal GPS reciever selected.
5. When trying to get a GPS signal (with any satnav software) have the slider open.
6. Make sure your in an open area with clear view to the sky. If this is your first fix, it may take a while (some have reported 30 mins, but it really shouldnt be that long). After your first fix it should take less than minutes to get locks after that.
Thanks for the info...i had all the settings u mentioned bar the server...so i have put that in ( what does that do anyways?)
and i think my main problem was i did not have the slider open...i just tried it in the garden and got a fix well chuffed. BUT do u have to leave the slider open for the rest of your journey or just to initially get hooked up.
Your supposed to leave it open, but most can get along fine with it shut, give it a try.
I suspect what did it was changing the address. Thats the address it uses to send the AGPS info off to get a fix quicker. AFAIK the supl nokia one is the only one that works.
Will be well gutted if i have to leave the slider open!!!! Im starting to think that nokia shouldnt have bothered with internal gps because so far its been a real dissapointment.
I originally got this phone thinking the internal sat nav will work nice with my tomtom 6 software. WRONG.
So brought garmin software put rotateme on so i could satnav in landscape mode, now only to find out that i will have to drive with the window open so the slider can fit in my holder to get a signal...or if in portrait i gotta have the sunroof open
gonna go for a test drive and see if it works
Unless you have a special windscreen (heated, UV protected etc) you should be able to have it with the slider shut.
You cant blame nokia for tomtom not working, thats purely in tomtoms court (unfortunatly).
I've got a heated front screen and my GPS is spot on!

i dont get the gps complaints. my internal gps on n95 works like a charm. its accurate as my factory navigation in my acura in most situations. and tomtom is at fault, not the nokia or gps. i installed garmin, and its incredibly good and accurate for me. i shut the slide and put the phone in landscape mode for gps, and it works fine. it might give barely less of a signal, but still holds the lock with the slide closed.
I've never had a problem with the slide closed using GPS either. Always worked nicely when BT'd to my N800 maps app. :icon14:
i visites my mother yesterday and she had just got a new n95! and she was complaining that she'd been trying to get a GPS signal for 3 hours! she stood in the kitchen and showed me ther was no signal and said it has been llike that since she got it! i then told her u had to be outside or at least be able to see the sky! 🙄 doh!
anyway back on topic, just thought id add that🙄
ok..been out for a drive and was not too impressed to be honest i had to have the slider open or else it had to keep recalculating and was really far behind...
I cant see why the slider has to be open all the time??? the only thing i could think of with mine is i have default settings so... i have the screen saver active and keypad lock on when slider is closed.
so with the guys who say they have no probs with the phone closed have u these settings deactivated?
Hmm. Was this with Garmin?
I suggest you try it with another program, perhaps nokia maps. That way you can see the strength of the signal.
I still think theres an issue with the arials in N95s, hence why different people get different results.
yes it was with garmin. would new firmware updates improve anything maybe? just really frustrating. thanks for all the advice so far though.
What firmware are you on? *#0000# to find out.....
v11.0.026 01-11-07 rm-320
Is it a branded handset ie Vodafone etc?
Have you plugged it into NSU to see if there is an update available? Cant guarantee anything, but an update may help improve performance.
I would be tempted to see if the same problem occur with Nokia Maps, to try and determine if it is just Garmin which is the problem.
The other option is to try exchanging it as you are not happy with performance
just tried NSU but says i already got latest updates....
would it be worth a try disabling the screensaver.
also am i using it correctly...i open slider open software wait till i get a signal then close slider and start journey.

nope u gota have it open all the time! i experianced this with garmin aswell i used it for a 25 mile journey threw a big city with it open and it was fab it recalculated a few times but i put that on silent so u dont notice!
i then did the same journey in reverse with the slider slid the other way for a landscape view and the garmin was slow at telling me to turn and i was going threw the roundabouts b4 it even said take the 3rd exit! i tilted it back upright with it open and never had any problems! well except geting the speed camera's to work🙄
gd luck and hope this helps!

yes just to eliminate any variables, always leave the slider open exposing the number keys. the gps antenna is beneath the ZERO key, so let it have line of sight to the sky. i use garmin, vxx.xx.60. the .40 version had some slight issues with late turn directions etc. i guess maybe large tall buildings could be giving some people trouble. i am in the open sky here in california, and i swear the gps is nothing but spot on accurate. wish i could post a video. i walk out my front door, and open garmin. 15 seconds later the satellite lock is solid green in the garmin app and ready to go. if you are using a branded n95 maybe thats your problem. i do not think the v11 has A-GPS enabled. debrand that thing and put on firmware v20.
Im pretty sure the 8GB had AGPS from release, especially as he had to change the positioning server. The 8Gb only goes up to firmware V15, released not long ago.
Question now is, to debrand and update, or return it and get another?
How stable is it with the slide open? If its stable in holding a lock, you wont be able to return it. And Im pretty sure none of the firmware updates do anything to improve the signal.

The GPS on all versions of the N95 is quite good at staying in sync. In open areas it doesn't much matter if the slider is open or closed, the big problem, ergonomics, the antenna is in a stupid position so covering it with your hand is far too easy to do. Overall it's about as good any other low to mid range GPS you might find on the market. (With exception to SIRF star III based units which have a much better set of ears)
I have no problem with late turns at all, just doesn't happen - I live in one of the bigger Asian cities with hundreds of thousands of tightly compacted roads, alleys, streets, and highways. I should make one exception, if I have to make a tight series of several left/right turns within a couple of hundred meters, it tends to tell me only the first, plus a random scattering in between, this is ok though, I drive with the thing stuck on the windscreen and follow the arrow. Usually it will tell me the whole series some distance before though - in x meters turn left, then right, then left, then left etc.
with slider open it worked well. Maybe to have it closed i will have to buy a different in car holder. Mine clips onto my vents. So maybe i need one that can go on windscreen. Any recommendations where i can get a good one in the uk.
Brodit with the built in charger is the way to go, allows slide both ways, nearly full access to all keys including no the side etc.
Regards
for those who get good reception with the slider closed where is your phone mounted in your car
