Wireless networking with N95

16 replies · 7,642 views · Started 15 January 2008

Why haven't I found this site before??? I've wasted so much time on other sites!!!:frown:

OK, got a N95 (of course), and I use it a lot as a secondary laptop for browsing when my wife is using my laptop for ebaying, facebooking, 2nd Lifeing and what else useless she's doing online.

So, needless to say, my Dell Inspiron 6400 (Vista Home Premium) and my N95 (01.01) RM-159 (V20.0.015) are BOTH connected to my Netgear wireless router and peacefully co-exists at the same time.

BUT! I cannot set up a wireless network with my laptop!
(ad-hoc network works, but then neither my precioussss (the N95, not my wife:rolleyes😊 or the laptop can then connect via the router)

:stupido3:How can I set up a wireless network so I can access all my blue movies... (Did I say blue??? 😮😮😮I meant my.... Ray Mears videoes! yes! that's it! my Ray Mears videos:embarasse) stored on my laptop from my n95 (to transfer, not streaming) while at the same time my better 9/10 doesn't get her surfing disturbed???:stupido3:

CLEAR, CONSISE (in other words: For Dummies:tongue😊 answers how this can be done will be appreciated!!!

Sounds like you want to install something like SymSMB 2.00. This is 3rd party software (at a cost) which will allow your N95 to access shared files and folders on your laptop and, equally, allow your laptop to access shared files and folders on your N95.

Using this I am able to copy music from our Media Center PC to my N95 without interrupting whatever the Media Center PC is doing at the time.

The official user manual isn't that helpful in setting up but I posted a useful tip to the settings on the Telexy forum.

It's a bit hard to follow what you are saying - I understand each word, just not quite how you've strung them together. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking you have a laptop, an N95, a router, and a wife.

I figure the problem is that with the current setup you are not able to browse your laptop from the N95 to copy movies for viewing.

If I understand the problem right, SymSMB will allow you to do what you need.

You don't need to set up any weird routing, you can do it all through the netgear. Just use SymSMB (sorry, it's not free) to access the shared drives on your laptop.

Edit: Sorry ffcphone, I didn't copy you! I promise, we posted exactly the same time.

Heres a guide i posted in a few forums, totaly FREE

Dont you hate when you need to connect your phone with the USB cable every time u want some new files from your computer on the phone, or transfer new taken clips or pictures you made to your computer ?

Download Mini Server
Save the file where ever you want on your computer.
No installation is needed for this, just start the exe file.
It will look like this when first started.

In the top window you will se 2 ip adresses (the first one is your local host adress, second is your local network).
You only need the second (local network adress)

Now we are ready to add some folders 😊 by dragn drop.

When all your folders are added it will look something like this.

Now we are ready to give it a try...
Open your phones web browser and dial the IP ( in my case it's 192.168.0.19)
The start page will look like this.

If you want to upload a file to your computer, you need to browse IN TO the folder where you want the file to be stored.
At the bottom of EVERY folder you will se this.

Klick in the square to the left of the upload button, choose phonemem or massmem.
Now the phones internal filebrowser will open.
Browse to the file you want to upload, mark and press "choose".
Now klick Upload button and voila!! :woohoo: The file is on your HardDrive.

NOTE, there is a small BUG in the program, to get back to this page (se below) DONT press the [Up] link
thats on top in EVERY folder which you need if you want to go to another folder.

You have to use the browser button "previous/back", and you will se this.

Thanks a lot guys! Got installed SymSB now (doesn't work though, just get "Failed to read X:\ Operation is timed out. Return to root?" (returns to root whether you press yes or no...)

So obviously I'm doing something wrong (something on my laptop for sure😛cguru😊

I'll try on telexy's forum to see if I can find more user friendly installation guides, and if not, I'll try the other filebrowser in this thread.

anyway, cheers for your help!!!

OK, SymSB seems to be a brilliant program if it wasn't for it being incredibly user-hostile!!!
I've tried EVERYTHING on telexy's foras without any luck. (2 hours of trials, but mostly errors...)
Then I tried Miniserver...

Why couldn't telexy have made it so simple???
😛cguru:

We scandinavians know how to make stuff!

Try this to make SymSMB work...it's an extract from a guide I put up on the Telexy forums...

"I had exactly the same problem but more by luck than judgement just got it to work.

In Network Drive settings:-

Name, Drive, Access point and Account all self-explanatory.

For Host, enter the name of your PC as indicated under Control Panel -> System -> Computer name -> Full computer name. This will be identical to the first part of Account in the line above Host. In my example my laptop is known as Laptop2 so under Host I have Laptop2

I share the My Documents folder on Laptop2. Under Share I have My Documents. (Please note, the shared folder MUST be EXACTLY as it is shared. Right click the folder/drive in Windows Explorer, click the Share tab and ensure you've got the name EXACTLY as in the Share Name box.)

Try that as a guide and see if you have any joy. The official manual doesn't offer any assistance with Host or Share and these are the two key areas.

My god! Miniserver is so incredibly simple it's fantastic!

Another way to achieve a similar result is to install and configure Orb on your PC. It's quite straightforward (although nothing could be as easy as Miniserver) and it has the advantage that it allows you to use the built in Home Media UPNP functionality on the N95.

UPNP lets you stream, upload, or download your media files, or potentially to select a file on one pc and direct it to be played on other one that might be in a different room for example.

Orb is free by the way.

Can i just say that the mini server program is stunningly simple to use. It would be usefull if i could download complete files so an album in a folder instead of doing each track but for free it is great. I might even donate.

Mini Server is great!! I had to open port 80 on my BT Home hub.

Finally, I have tried both, the MiniServer and Symsmb.

MiniServer.
Can not copy more then one file at a time, no folder copy either, no security, works only on computer.
Its not a networking, it is just single file downloading.
Simple to get it running.

Symsmb.
Does multiple file copy as well as folder copy too, so you can copy the album in one click.
Does the real secure networking, provides file access from computer to phone and from phone to computer.
Configuration takes time, reading the documentation is highly recommended
as I have spend some time to find out what to put into the Domain field, its happens to be the Full Computer Name.
As soon as configuration is sorted out the application is awesome.

he problem with SymSMB is that unless your on a domain its useless for a multi workstation environment. I just want to create open shares that I can share to my network without having to create mutiple accounts hosts and pcs on my phoen to allow access each time. Domain should be optional as should permissions when there not needed.

This is something that's worked well for me. Provided that the videos are in the correct format for the phone, you could always try TVersity on your PC and then just access it using the Home Media app on your phone.

while connecting your phone with the laptop you need to connect your phone with the services by first pairing and then synchronizing

Or you could use Nokia's 'Home Media Server' it's free and its in the PC Suite Menu - For Pictures, Musics & Video Transfer : )

:icon14:

What I meant is that if I want to allow an open share(s) I cant.

You have to set up a user for everyone who needs access ( regardless of wether you want password protected access ) and every workstation they are on. I have to create one for UnpluggedDesktop and UnpluggedLaptop. or force it to login my in under a different user and do unpluggeddesktop\unplugged but if I recall I coudlent get that working and 2 days isnt rearlly enougth time to experiment with a program.

unless of course your on a domain where the username is always domain\user then the computer name is irrelevant )

If the prorgram allowed open shares ( permisisons on the share not the user ) then its useless to me.

The computer name is rearlly irrelavant anyway. If you access your machine from another machine with an identical user account it just works. You shouldent need to specify a hostname or domain for the user unless you are actually wanting to use it in a domain environment. Because the program forces you to enter something in the domain ( in this case the workstation name ) then by default accessing it from another machine thats not that workstation is going to require you to provide it in the username.

The idea is good though.

How did you do that mate?? Icve tried everything under the games and application sharing thing in advanced on my home hub but nothing works! Can only get to it with my phone (N95) using local network addresses.. but I want other people top be able to use it too :/
