Steve's been looking at GooSync; which promises to sync up your smartphone's PIM data to the relevant Google applications (specifically your Gmail contacts list and Google Calendar data) as an alternative to being tied to Outlook and Microsoft. Can SyncML on the smartphone, and a bit of third party magic, come up with a solution for his data ?

If you use Thunderbird mail with the 'lightning' calendar plugin on your desktop PC, you can also sync back down from Google Calendar to that. Use your normal mail provider's IMAP instead of POP3 on both desktop and smartphone, and you have complete, Outlook-free synchronisation of both mail and calendar, without the necessity of keep visiting either Google or Goosync websites: they're simply the intermediaries. The ability to share your Google calendar with other people adds yet another range of possibilities, although I can't persuade the wife to get into the habit.
My setup still leaves me having to use Nokia PC Suite to back-up contacts, though.
Scheduleworld.com has been working excellently for me, I use it to sync my N95 calendar and Google calendar. Worth a look.
Can you confirm whether goosync can synchronize contact category groups?
Rosh1182,
No, categories are not synced with Google Calendar, but you can work around it (in a fashion) by syncing additional calendars (Google Calendar allow you to have many Calendars - in essence categories). This is not available in the free GooSync product, though.
For the record, I'm a paid-up user of GooSync, and I'm quite happy with the service.
How does S60 treat the multiple calendars? Further, I was more concerned about categories (or groups) for address contacts. Any success with syncing address book entries in groups?
Does anyone know how you can sync desktop outlook calendar with an s60 device's native calendar over the air? (not bluetooth).
PC Suite uses SyncML, and there are Outlook <-> SyncML software applications. However, the type of OTA you are talking about means syncing through the Internet. This means that you have to be able to access your desktop over the Internet, which is complicated to setup.
The alternative is to sign up with a hosted MS Exchange service and sync both your phone (using Mail for Exchange) and your desktop with the MS Exchange service.
Another alternative is to use scheduleworld. You can sync your phone calendar natively with scheduleworld, and I believe there is an Outlook plugin for scheduleworld as well.
i suppose u can try emoze for a similar set of functions (plus push)
One solution is GCalSync, but it don't work very well on S60 3rd devices.

How do you sync between your phone and Thunderbird? I couldn't find a way for Symbian (N95) devices... Thanks in advance for helping!
