Whats the next big phone?

19 replies · 4,735 views · Started 17 January 2008

My contract runs out in a couple of months. Currently have an N95. Was just wondering if anyone knows what the next decent phones to be released soon are?

I am interested in phones similar to the N95 or ones with one or more of these:

- Slim line
- 3g
- MP3/Movie support
- Sat Nav
- Nice looking
- Wifi
- Decent camera

I am even thinking about getting one of those "free PS3" deals on the web, then sell the phone and keep my N95.....

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Cheers

None publically announced. Theres N96 pictures floating around, but no-one can varify them (the black ones, not the silver fake).

Your wishlist is almost the same as mine. Hence why Im going for the 'Dora', although thats only 3.2 mp camera.

Supposedly in Q2 this year.

3GSM conference is next month in Barcelona, so I would hope that Nokia will unveil some new handsets there. Whether that includes the N95 replacement is anyones guess at the moment.....

Cool. Thanks for the reply.

Can you tell me where I can lookup the Dora phone?

When I google it, I get Dora the explorer!

I'm out of contract already, I didn't want to wait 7 months to get an N95 so bought one SIM free when they first came out. So I'm waiting for something to upgrade to.

I was thinking about the N82 as it's got all the features I want (really like the idea of the Zenon flash), but I don't like the keyboard after having a look at one in a shop. Also the N95 is the first slide phone I've had and really like the bigger screen and shorter phone it gives.

I was also thinking of the N95 8GB, although the screen is bigger and the battery is better, I prefer the fact that it has a removeable memory card more, and I've got an 8GB card anyway.

Was also thinking of getting a free phone on a contract and then selling it on eBay, but if some thing came out afterwards I'd have to spent all the money I made on the sale to buy one SIM free again.

So after all that I might as well wait! 😊

Houndog, its well worth looking at sim only contracts/pay as you go. I seem to remember some monthly ones which gave you a much better allowance of minutes/texts/data etc than the usual contracts with phones.

Obviously this is because your not paying for the phone with part of the monthly contract. Might be worth a look since the next phone up from the N95 seems a long way off, certainly no-one has heard anything about it.

I agree. My girlfriends contract came around and she liked her phone so rang up and arranged a cheaper deal (by threatening to leave of course). She ended up getting a 12 month contract for 15 a month PLUS 60 credit on the account (effectively 4 months free).
She gets bucket loads of minutes and texts too.

Yep. What most people forget (or dont know) is that the minutes and texts cost the networks absoloutly naff all, and the high contract prices (30-40 a month) is generally paying for the phone.

So if you overrun the contract, your simply paying them extra.

I had the same problem recently. There is nothing really much better on the market than N95.
And my contract was going to an end, so had to do something.
I wanted a PS3 as well, but after careful checks I realised that there's no point in going for those "Get free PS3" deals.
I got N95 8GB for free from Phones4U. They also gave me £70 instant cashback.
I sold it for £320 ( u can easily get £340 if you'll wait a bit, I just couldn't be bothered 😊 ) so it's £320+£70 =£390 - PS3 from Ebay around £250 = £120 left, normal contract, upgrade after 14months,
instead of paying ~£80 for a Nokia 6300 for 24 months on some ridiculously high line rental in these "Get FREE PS3" deals...

That's a good idea, I'll have a look into that. :icon14:

I agree that there's nothing even remotely on the horizon to offer more than the N95. The N96 (if it's true) doesn't really offer anything more.

3Shirts, what network is your girlfriend on, if it's Voda, it'll give me more ammo when I phone to speak to them? 😉

Being out of contract and threatening to leave is the only time you can get anything from the networks. When I upgraded to my N73, they wanted 250 for it, they said it was a new phone and there's nothing they can do about the price. A quick "can you close my account please?" and person on the other end of the phone 'found' another screen where it was free!! 🙄

Its worth getting your PAC (or is it PUK, can never remember) for taking your number over.

Last time my contract ended, they didnt offer me anything worthwhile, and so I ordered a PAC intending to move to Orange.

Later on Voda rang me and gave me a better offer. Which was very lucky for them as Orange wouldnt deliver to my work address, so I hadnt ordered yet.

Dont know if they still do it that way - perhaps Hopefully useful can comment 😉 - but you never know.

Well its moved on, since theres no sign of any new phones on the horizon. Sadly.

I suspect it was a big phone gag 😊

Hound Dog, my girlfriend is on O2.

Keep your N95 and consider some of the more well feature internet tablets and use them via Bluetooth and DUN for you internet acces at the same time as using your wonderful N95.
I use an Ameo/N95 combo and it's a class act.

I was in a similar boat. I've had an N80 for 18 months and loved it. I quite fancy a Neo 1973 but they aren't just ready yet so I took out a O2 simplicity (was on Canary 30) instead, bought a N95 unlocked for £170 and I'm using that till something 'interesting' turns up.

Booo, just phoned Voda and although I can upgrade, my contract actually expires on the 23rd February. I have to wait until then. :frown:
