I've had some problems with my 9210. One issue is that it crashes when it's recharging (but it automatically reboots) - I've had that with other phones so nothing new there.
The most annoying issue I have is that it freezes on me. It works okay after I take out and replace the battery, but it's still annoying. One of the reasons why I went for the 9210 is that I used to use a Psion s7 and ER5 EPOC OS is the most reliable piece of software I have EVER used. Sadly I can't say the same thing for the 9210. I suspect this is probably because the Communicator is based on phone hardware which is a bit of a dog, and not the software.
When I'm travelling I rely on my 9210 for Contacts, Calender, and taking brief notes in Word. I also check to see if I have any exciting email. I use WAP to buy the odd book from Amazon - and now I'll also be checking allaboutsymbian too. So, when the 9210 goes kaput, I'm angry! A couple of times now I've had to format the internal drive to get it working again after it's frozen on me. And when I'm travelling - because most of the software isn't loaded internally - it's not possible to get the device back normal without connecting it to a PC!
As a result I experimented with loading all the OS to MMC. My theory was that if the 9210 freezes I can format the internal drive because all the software apps are on the MMC I will effectlvely have a clean 'new' system (I could even have another seperate MMC as fully loaded backup MMC). Unfortunately this didn't work and I had persistant freezing problems. After I formatted the internal drive things got even worse and File Manager disappeared. Now I'm back to the original installation which seems to be the most reliable.
Anyone got any suggestions or ideas about recovering a 9210 and returning to a clean 'base' system 'in the field' using some kind of backup method - without using a PC? Mabe there isn't a way, I don't know. Sure, I still like my 9210 but I wish it was as relaible as my old Psion s7. Rock solid reliability will be my next choice of PDA/smartphone. I might even go the way of a low end Palm (about 70!) and a seperate small phone.
What do you guys think?
What firmware version are you running?
I'm another old Psion user (5 and netBook). You will find that the 9210 is more unstable than the ER5 pda's, but not nearly as unstable as you describe.
It's firmware 3.62.
Well, it's frozen twice on me (requiring more than just a simple reboot - but a C drive reformat and fresh software reinstall from PC). I've had the 9210 for well over a year so I guess that's not bad going.
My gripe isn't that it froze on me twice 'in the field', but that there was no way to fully restore the system software from ROM because much of the OS has to be reinstalled via a PC using the PC Suite; that's no help when you're 'in the field'.
I think that an up-grade to v4.13 would be a good thing! I had the 9210 and wasn't happy with it because of the problems we all know(system not stable, slows down, freezes),it has helped for me to up-grade! I see that your freezing problem is real bad, probably the worst I have heard of because I didn't need to format it when it froze!A re-boot and it went ok! Maybe you should check with a nokia service point and explain them the problem. It could be that your 9210 came out bad from nokia, and if you are lucky they will replace it...I had to send my 9210 7 times in 8 months...  :x
In june I bought the 9210i and since then I'm quite happy...
I know that for the money we've spent nokia should give us a perfect device...but you know how technology is...
Anyway keep us informed...
Greetings! 😉
Thanks guy's I appreciate the feedback 😉
I've just realised there is a simple way to install Nokia data SIS file back to the main drive - after a C drive format - without using a PC...just keep Nokia data SIS file on your MMC and use the Install / Remove app in the Control panel. This way gets arround not being able to use File mamager (which gets deleted when you format the 9210).
I've found mine has been doing random freezes recently along with reboots. Turns out the problem is that the flap for the mmc no longer goes in tight and pushes the microswitch telling it that there is an MMC in there. Hence it thinks the MMC is out and crashes any running software. The problem has been solved with some gaffer tape.
I didn't know this aspect of the problem that a 9210 can have... 😮
