This is advance awarning for the admins. The site will be moving onto a dedicated server sometime in the next week. There shouldn't be too much of an interuption to service aside from the fact the fourm will probably be disbaled for between 3-8 hours.
I realise this is a bit if a pain given some of the troubles we've had. But I'm doing it now rather than later. Its something that had to be done some time in the next couple of months.
We'll be a
P3 1GHZ
512 MB SDRAM
60 GB Hard Disk
40 GB Backup hard disk
300 GB Bandwith.
This should mean the site can triple without any problems (and more probably). At the moment we're on a shared server and use around 30-40% of the resources on (it slightly lower spec than above).
This does means if people need some webspace for small project it should be available as a perk. It obviously alos gives greater flexibility over what we can and can't do on the server in terms of installing extra things. One good thing we should be able to do is have a much more advanced gallery, better statistics, and obviously be a faster.
You probably wont notice much difference in speed because we'll be in the same data centre. However we have an entire server to ourselves. Yes this is going to cost more, but I hope to get some of it back either though donation(maye). If you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. Don't worry too much as current advertising just covers the costs.
Thought you might want to know. I'll be posting in the main forum about this later.
Hmm....I good idea to atract freelance developers is to host their projects pages like for example sourceforge does! This way you get their appreciation, traffic, more advertising and contribute to symbian development more. Just a tinny thought!
Ewan looks around shiftily
We don't really want to step on anyone's toes with a Symbian Sourceforge at this moment in time...
...but I don't see why we can't host seperate "sites" for people, just that I think a whole Sourceforge setup isn't something AAS need concern itself with.

Thats really good idea!!
JyriK edit:
Ok, maybe not sourceforge style, but provide some developers, that dont
have a site, a place to distribute their programs.
So there is coming a symbian sf ?? 😃
At last a server we can call our own..... WOOOO!!!! I shall store my slippers by the door.
Wow big enough to stand alone 😊

Yeah thats how I ment it. It would be cool if AAS would host Domis file explorer etc. I dint mean an open source thing like sourceforge...just a web space and a subdomain....we are here to contribute to the symbian community arent we? Just a thought though no big deal!
Actually I was planning something like that.
Need to come up with a decent domain.
The advnatage of a dedicated server is that we can host sites on their own accounts including domain names etc.
I was plannig of free hosting for freeware / opensource stuff and maybe a small charge for shareware (say 20 a year).
Rafe
Souns cool!
