...or does anyone else find it all a bit too tedious? :frown:
I've been a fairly early adopter of new technologies over the past few years (I love my gadgets!) so I've always been very patient where it comes to things not quite working as you'd expect, having workarounds, upgrading soft/firmware etc.
However, after trying a few different bits of software over the past 10 months, I'm quite fed-up with trying to easily and quickly convert a DVD into a nice portable format for my N95 (and now N95 8Gb). :frown:
Perhaps my expectations are way too high, but I'd just like a software package that gives me point 'n' click conversion with the correct settings to convert a DVD into something that looks like the Spiderman 3 movie they ship with the N95 8Gb.
Also... I'd like it to convert it in 20 minutes, not 2 hours!
Is there anything out there that would do this for me? I'm very happy to pay for it, if such a package exists. Or am I living in a dream world????
Cheers! 😊
Jud
There are two great ways to do this.
One is to purchase the awesome software called 'clonedvd mobile' as this will serve your point and click needs. You tell it what phone you have and then enter the file you want to convert and then it will do everything for you.
Although, I've used this software, I've used it from a hard drive folder that had the dvd already decrypted so I don't know if this program decrypts dvd's or not. (can someone confirm, or I will check tonight when I get home from work).
Another way to do this is to use DVD shrink (google it) and save the dvd to your desktop in a folder and then use SUPER (google it, from erightsoftware) to convert it to an MP4 file and transfer that to your phone via USB (or whatever method you want to use) to the mem card (usually this takes up anywhere from 600Mb to 2 gig's of space).
If you would like info on using either of these softwares feel free to pm me.
Hi waxup,
CloneDVD looks like it might be worth a shot - it appears to convert straight from DVD without the need to rip it first, then convert it (ala Super).
I'm really looking for the one-stop-shop option, rather than having to rip it, then convert it.
Thanks, I'll give it a shot over the weekend.
Do you know how long it takes to convert a whole movie?
Cheers,
Jud

Another vote for CloneDVDmobile. I use this and when used in conjunction with AnyDVD (from the same people, and used to do the actual decryption) it is the easiest method I have come across. Stick in a DVD and minutes later, depending on DVD size (it's one of the quickest too), you'll have the necessary file ot put on your N95. Couldn't be simpler.
Oh, and lifetime free upgrades too, and they send emails to let you when a new version is available. All in all, rather nice user experience.
Oh PS, (another edit to add info 😉 ) It takes about 10mins for 40 mins, using my last run of Alias episodes as an example (but depends on your PC)
To convert a whole movie as in all the extras etc? or just the main movie?
I would say an hour and a max! but this all depends on your pc configuration.
Thanks guys! :icon14:
Sounds like CloneDVD might just do the job. Will let you know how I get on with it.
Cheers,
Jud
I use winavi mp4 converter. I normally convert avi's but it should (but dont quote me) do dvd's.
Takes about 5-10 minutes on my system and the results are excellent.

chrsfrwll,
Can I ask what settings you used? I tried CloneDVD in conjunction with AnyDVD at the weekend and had a few issues:
1. It took about 90 minutes to encode the movie.
2. The audio is out of sync with the video.
I'm sure it's just a settings thing, but if you can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful . 😊
Cheers,
Jud
90 minutes seems about right.
Try pausing the movie and then restarting it, see if it resyncs the audio. Sometimes with large video files the sound will get out of sync but a simple pause/ play resyncs it.
Also, before putting it over to your phone, play the file on your pc, if the sound and video sync up then you know the conversion worked and it's just the phone making it out of sync.
I use this convertor i found ages ago. Converts to 3gp.
I don't actually know if it can convert dvd files, but it's great for avi/mpg/wmv files.
A 44 minute video was 80mb last time i used it.
I use the "General: 3GPP+AAC General Setting" in the Setup.exe
And the "QVGA Normal Quality 15fps Stereo" setting.
But if anybody finds a better setting to use, post it back in here so i can try it and compare.

I find that taking a dvd quality video and converting to .3gp at 15 fps is not the same. Get a converter that will convert to mp4 at 29.5 fps and you'll notice a huge difference. Sure the file size will be bigger but the quality is oustanding.
