When I remove my headset or USB cable, I hear a creak then a pop.. sounds like it may break.
If the phone is facing up .. so you remove remove the headset by shifting the connector downwards or upwards?

Downwards is logical.
The Pop Port has two sort of metal hook connectors which, with a downwards motion naturally unhook.
To be honest though, a yank on the cable laterally works just as well, whether intentionally or by accident!
Don't think you should worry about breakage, though - you may just have a weak/creaky casing.
