Converting from Palm to P800

12 replies · 3,387 views · Started 28 January 2003

Hello all

I will recieve my P800 in a few days and my old Palm V will be out of service.

I plan to start using Lotus Notes, but how do I convert all my information (datebook and so on) from Palm desktop and my Palm V to P800 and Lotus notes?

Anyone who have done this?

Didn't try, but I'll think that you complete sync your palm with PC, then sync from PC into p800

Well, of course, but the thing is that I'm currently running the Palm desktop software at my PC, and it would definatly not sync with the P800 :-?

So to refine the question - how do I convert data from Palm desktop to Lotus notes (or Outlook as that might get it into the P800)?

I know 4 sure that the p800 i 100 % capatible with MS outlook. Tasks, calender, contacts ect.

So If you have an sync. prog. to your palm, that allows you to load the palm data into outlook, I son't think there will be any trouble.

The easiest way to do this would be to:

1. Turn on the IrDa of your P800
2. Go to your Vx's AddressBook
3. From the Drop-down Menu, select "Beam Category"

This should beam all your contacts from the Vx to the P800.

---

Another way would be to:

1. Sync your Vx with Palm Desktop, so you have the latest version of your Contacts.
2. From "File" on Palm Desktop, select "Export"
3. Export your contacts in vCard format
4. Send the exported vCard from your PC to your P800 via IrDa or Bluetooth.

---

Note that you lose your categories in this way.

---

Something else that's weird: you cannot see the categories (from Palm Addressbook) when you edit your entries, yet if you do a "Find" on the P800 using the Palm Addressbook Category Name, you will see all the contacts from that category.

---

Feel free to message me for any other questions. I just ported similar data from:

Sony Clie T665C (Palm OS 4.1)--> P800
Sony Clie NX70V (Palm OS 5)--> P800
Palm Tungsten T (Palm OS 5)--> P800

Well, th adress book don't seem to be any problem, it is the calender that worries me...

I guess I will have to go through outlook then...

Curiously when you beam addresses from thr palm (or Sony Clie) to the P800 some infdormation gets lost on the way. Very worrying - since I don't know which records to check and there are a lot.

When I tried to export vcard from the palm desktop and selected all records it only exported the first record as a vcard - does anyone know how to get all records transferred in one shot.

Also there seems to be no way to delete the information on the p800 in one shot - for example if you want to delete all contacts. I tried to sync using an empty addressbook on my PC and selecting full sync with keeping all records on PC but after about 30 minutes it said Sync failed. This happened twice. Any ideas?

That's strange... with the Palm Desktop for Mac, it allows you to export:
a) a specific category
b) all records
c) just one contact

There should be a dialog box in the "Export" settings pane.

Also there seems to be no way to delete the information on the p800 in one shot - for example if you want to delete all contacts.

I went through this once, and ended up resetting the phone (restore factory default settings), since I found no other way to do it.

HTH...

Thanks for all your help jackalhead. I have a Mac at home so I can try what you have done there. However, what did you use to sync your Clie with the Palm Software on the Mac? I have heard of a program called missing sync or something like that - did you use that?

If you have a Clie and are using a Mac, there are several ways with which to Sync:

a) If you're using the T-series Clies or later (T615, 625, 665, NR, NX, SJ), your Clie CAN sync with Palm Desktop for Mac, right out of the box

b) If you're using the N-series (N760 etc), to sync with your Mac, you need to purchase Missing Sync.

c) In order to use the MS Import program (mount your Memory Stick on the Desktop as a removable drive, using the Clie as the MS reader), you will need to purchase Missing Sync.

d) You can also Sync via Virtual PC.

You can find them at the following addresses:

Missing Sync (US$30 or so) - http://www.markspace.com
*they offer FREE upgrades*

Virtual PC - http://www.connectix.com

Hope that helps!

Simply press shift and select all contacts. I tried it with three and it worked.

I am having huge difficulties syncing Palm with Outlook (in order to move my Palm contacts into the P800) so I found this post and I am going to try the vCard solution...

I had a Clie NR70v before I had my P800. Here how I did it:

1.) try to get the latest version of Palmdesktop or get your cd installer of palm desktop.

2.) At the begenning of the installation, you will be asked if you want to sync with outlook or Palmdesktop, choose outlook.

3.) Now install your P800 PC suite, then sync with outlook 😊

4.) Voila 😊

Note: Im not sure if the earlier or downloadable palm desktops installers have this option of choosing between syncing with PalmDesltop or Outlook. But I had the M500 and then the M515 before I had the clie and the installers that came with them all had this option. IF you cant find it then I suggest you borrow the CD of a friend who has newer palms 😊

Also take note that categories will not be carried over. You will have to recategorize your contacts on the P800 and not on outlook because they will not be carried over to your P800 to so make sure to do this on your P800.
You will also be expereincing some small problems like repeats of a schedule on the same day.

MAKE SURE to make a backup of your brand new P800 before your first sync just incase problems will occur. Backups can be made from the Restore and backup software on the P800's PC suite.

Enjoy!
