Does anyone recommend a good app to play back videos instead of the standard Real Player. Ideally one that allows Fastforward and rewind.

Coreplayer. Still in Beta and you have to pay for it but worth it. Pause, FFwd, Rewind, Recommence film from where stopped, and it handles Divx codec.
you can pause, fast forward and rewind on realplayer.

Coreplayer is annoying cos it plays anything and has nice features but has the most confusing and unintuitive menu system ever invented!

yup, and pressing up and down will fastforward and rewind respectively.
