9290 Version and Software

11 replies · 2,853 views · Started 29 January 2003

Greetings all. I am new the forum and thought I would ask about my new 9290.

After entering the code from another thread I have been given this firmware version:

v 03.35
27-02-02
RAB-3

I do not have Opera installed to my knowledge but there is a web browser. Is this the opera web browser that has been de-branded to conceal its maker?

Also, is this the most current firmware for these phones?

There is also a WAP entry and an Internet entry to configure the phone to dialup or use wireless to get to the Internet. I have successfully configured the dialup and used it (it may be crazy but it is faster than my TREO!) but I would like to know if I can use the WAP here in the United States. I am a T-mobile customer. I am aware that T-mobile offers GPRS and that the 9290 does not support GPRS, but I was wondering if there was some way to get WAP working here in the States.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to being a member of the forum until you kick me out.

Nice Intro.... 😃 Welcome.

Yep, this is the best site in town (World I meant).

Soon will come your answers.

Welcome again

Hello and welcome,

Maybe I can help you with your 9290...

I too have the 9290 in the US with Tmobile. The way you have to connect is through a internet connection with a 9600 ISDN configuration. Tmobile supplies the number (i've got the info and settings if you need some help). You wont have access to tmobiles "high speed" network. Thats what they tried to sell me to start of with (9.99 with 2mbs of data). Here's what you need:

If your wanting to use tmobiles access..it's 2.99 a month (called by TZONE). this supplies you with access to wap sites and the "my tmobile" page for you to log in and select the desired content you can access from your 9290 when you go to the "my tmobile" site with your phone. the 2.99 plan gives you acess to only pop email services that you set up and add from the "my tmobile" site. if you want to check "web based" email (like your corporate web outlook), you must pay 9.99 a month.

the funny thing about the 2.99 and 9.99 plans is that you get 1mb of data transfer with the 2.99 and 10mbs with the 9.99. now here's the funny part.. because the 9290 doesnt support GPRS, tmobile can't track your mb' usage. sooo... they just charge against you minutes of your package plan for making a data call.

if you dont want to pay for wap access through tmobile, just use your dial up account.

i hope this helps. if you need some more info, just post your contact info and i'll hopefully help you. i've learned through lots of phone calls to tmobile that i know more about access with a 9290 then they do!

Thank you so much. Nice to hear that there are some options. I really appreciate your reply.

Have you tried using Opera on your 9290?

Yes,

It works but, like you'll see with others, tons of out of memory errors. If you disable images, you can avoid some of the errors. I used a program like appman to make sure nothing else was running. That seemed to help.

Usually when I'm out and trying to use it, all the errors get annoying and I end up using the built in one.

On the "WAP" topic, you can use any ISP to use the wap browser. You don't have to subscribe to TZONE for wap access.

Hall

Okay, with that in mind, have you checked your firmware version? Do you know what the newest version is?

Aegeas

While using Opera (with images off) I have had much success by ensuring ALL apps are closed. I like Hall, use Appman. I rarely use the standard browser.

Oh! Welcome to AAS. For a long time there were not any 9290 users here so I turned to a real lurker. All I needed was a pair of binoculars, a raincoat and a window to peer into to complete this mental picture.

I will say that even though there may not be many 9290 users, the 9210 and 9210i users here are incredible. Friendly and helpful while answering questions pretty quickly. Enjoy it! ...and come back often 😃

in theory, yes the opera browser supports java. 😊

i always use the internal one because it becomes a pain so i havent went java searching much... we need a new ROM upgrade with that included!

i have the same firmware you do. from what i've seen, it's the only firmware out on the 9290's. someone said you can upgrade to the latest 9210i's firware.

it is nice to see fellow 9290'ers out there. the users with 9210's & 9210i's are very helpful. i must admit that it is nice to have some fellow 9290'ers to help support the US's lack of communicator support. 😊
Does the version of Opera you have working on your 9290 support javascript?
I will have to defer to others to answer that question (I barely no how to spell java, let alone know when I am using it😊. And to be perfectly honest, I do not use the internet that much because the speed is so slow. I have really been spoiled with cable internet.
