The Smartphones Show goes retro, by popular request

OK, I give in. After numerous complaints about the video formats used in my Smartphones Show video podcast, I've reverted to plain old H.263-encoded MP4, which should mean that the show now plays again on everything from a lowly Nokia N70 to a Sony Ericsson P900 and upwards - so virtually everything. Show 52 is out today and includes my run down of the top S60 apps, plus reviews of the Palm Treo 500 and the Blackberry 8310. Here's the RSS feed, if you wanted to start grabbing the MP4s again...

Read on in the full article.

N70 is not lowly !!! (grrr...)
Lol.. Anyways, thanks for listening to the vox populi.. Although i have to ask- does this mean lower quality for N95 & E90 users ?

I suppose, maybe in a years time it would be fair to switch to the h.264 codec when it becomes more widespread and lowly N70's get totally phased out.. Thanks so much till then 😊

Yeah, H.264 is just so.... sharp. But in all honesty, the quality here isn't that much worse and the pool of people who can now watch it on the move is a lot, lot wider.

You're the ones who're gonna ultimately benefit from it. 😉

Your viewership is going to increase, by the way N70 isn't lowly, it still has a huge fan following and in India, its still selling like hotcakes.

aww now ive upgraded from n70 to an n95 8gb for nothing 😞.

ghehe just kidding, good work, as i dont really notice the difference

I don't know about lowly but the H.264 encoded podcasts weren't playing very well at all on my E90 either - lots of skipping and video and voice out of sync problems. It got to the point when I stopped downloading and watching them on my E90 also. I don't know what you did Steve when encoding your video but H.264 content normally plays Okay on my E90 except for your podcasts. So I with my not so lowly (although definitely Nokia's forgotten child it seems) E90 definitely welcome your decision to go back to the H.263 encoding. Cheerios...

Steve, I just want to say thanks. This is much appreciated from an E61 owner.

Ah yes, it's wrong. I tweaked the final version and forgot to change the page!

The amounts are normally wrong by 1Mb or so though - it all depends on whether you count millions of bytes or Megabytes. Whole can of worms, just don't go there!!!

Steve

Now I can watch it on my N810 which, surprisingly, was unable to show it (along with any other videos recorded on a N93i or N82. Or am I doing somethig wrong?
