Ok so I've done my research and I know the built in player won't support avi's, but I would really rather play things directly than have to convert them first. So what options do I have ?
Home media server whilst better than I expected obviously doesn't help me.
I installed winamp remote some time ago (which is basically just orb) and realised that it did allow me to play avi's. To do this you have to to share your required files and then access them via a website. This works reasonably well on a wireless connection but streamig video is obviously a bit flakey over even 3g.
Winamp remote also runs a upnp server but accessing them still gives the "selected device does not support this operation" error. So how does it work when going via the web ? Does it have some sort of streaming conversion process, and if so can it be mimiced ?
Is anyone aware of any other options ?
Transferring the files over to the phone and using an alternative player is obviously one, but that's not what I'm after although I did see a suggestion that core player might soon support upnp which sound good although my first impressions of core player weren't great.
Thanks
