N95 8GG : all delivered ring tones lost

Hi,

I have had a French SFR N85 8GB for one month and besides I'm delighted with it, I have a serious issue.

Initially, I had listened to all delivered tones and chosen those I liked, it's working fine. "At some point in time" (I have no idea when exactly, I saw this less than 2 weeks ago), I realized all the ring tones were gone : when I go in the setup personalization (I use it in French, not sure of the menu names in English), on any item where a ring tone can be selected (ring, sms, etc), the only option I have is "deactivate" or "buy tones" (which goes on the vodaphone site).

I tried to inactivate the sound for sms, I thought it was a good idea, "it has to be a temporary bug, I'll have the list back". Now I don't have anymore ring for sms, and no way I can put one back.

I can't find the files with the phone explorer, or via a usb connexion. I had actually never tried to see them before that, I'm not sure where they are supposed to be.

In the phone memory, there are still 2 mp3 and 1 dcf that I had added into "Clips audio/Sons numériques" (logical name ? or do they name all directories in French when you setup French language in the phone ? weird), and that's all. Nothing in "Clips audio/sonneries".

In mass memory (English name for "mémoire de masse" ?), there are all the .aac that I have copied in "Clips audio/MUSIC" (over 4500, this is my new music player), 2 wav of spiderman in "Clips audio/sonneries" and the 5 delivered mp3 songs in "Clips audio/Sons numériques".

I have deleted nothing, I tried to use PC Suite and restore the backup of phone memory I had done after I bought it, no change (but I can't see any music file in the list of restored files anyway).

But the phone still rings, the debussy.aac I had chosen as regular ring still (luckily) rings when I'm called, but I can't find it on the phone, neither with the search tool.

HELP !!

PD: I have not changed the firmware 10.0.021. PC suite doesn't propose any new one for SFR product code in France and I don't want to "force" it yet...

After checking further, I confirm I'm talking about the directories "Sounds/Digital" and "Sounds/Simple" on both mass memory and phone memory in my examples.

Even if no one can explain / have a solution idea for that problem, it would be a great help for me if someone can tell me where I could find those rings somewhere on the net, or maybe copy them on some place so I can copy them back ??

Hi,

sorry my English is not native so I'm not sure about what you are saying, but if you suggest that some N95 8GB owner on the forum comes to post here about my issue (or copy the files ?), as I suggested in my previous post, I agree !!!

yes, I am agreeing with you.

Or, seeing as you havent had the phone very long, return to to Nokia because you should not just loose all your ringtones!

have you looked with your file browser in the z:\data\Sounds\Digital folder... is there anything in there?

Ah ok.

Yes as I said above, in the phone memory there are still 2 mp3 and 1 dcf that were added into \data\Sounds\Digital when installing fring, and that's all. Nothing in \data\Sounds\Simple.

In mass memory (English name for "mmoire de masse" ?), there are all the .m4a that I have copied in "Clips audio/MUSIC" (over 4500, this is my new music player), 2 delivered wav of spiderman in \data\Sounds\Simple and the 5 delivered mp3 songs in \data\Sounds\Digital.

Someone suggested me to reinstall the firmware, do you think it's a good idea ? Also, I was wondering if it is possible with NSU ? I have tried NSU in the past - it wouldn't propose any new firmare for my SFR N95 - and I can't remember any option to "reinstall"...
(I can't try here because proxy blocks NSU which has no setup for this, I'll try tonight at home)

Thanks.

ahhh, so they are Fring sounds....

You can re-install the firmware yes. Its very strange to have it all disappear from mass memory.. If you do re-install, you'll need to re-install your other files from backup or elsewhere, but should sort out your ringtones...

Let us know.

I sure will.

Just to mention, it's though strange that I can't see no ring (those from fring, the spiderman ones, the 5 delivered mp3 neither) in the ring selection dialogs...

Well I did the upgrade to 15.0.015 (SFR) with NSU, just before restoring the PC suite backup I went to option of my dream, it took a very long time when clicking on the ring selection, and... nothing, same thing, no tone available...

But standard ugly SFR tones where back as default rings, so with suggestion from a French forum I went in the music player and I could use the option to set a track as current profile ring tone, which worked (but I still can't see the list).

The guy said that delivered ring tones are not in phone memory or mass memory but in the RAM (hence the fact they would reinstall with firmware upgrade), so for me it's clearly an issue when building the list of available tones (I over 4500 into \data\sounds\music for more than 7.5 GB), some bug due to number.

He suggest to zip all music, which may be a good idea, but I don't see it very feasible : since I only have 130 MB left on the mass memory, I'd have to try to use winzip from PC with phone connected to zip on the PC HD (is that possible ?), but then no more music, apart from the "proof of concept" it won't help much.

The idea of deleting the music and copy back later is the same - also considering it took me many hours to copy all that music.

So I'm afraid I'll have to use my copied music as ring tone source, which I don't like very much, I never use real music for that, I don't think they do good rings, not the right format / pitch / rythm / structure.

Status quo with this issue, I still don't find the courage to try a zip / move / delete procedure of all the music just to "see what happens with the ring list"...

The most bothering thing at the moment is that I don't have anymore sms ring, which is an issue.

So I got the idea of trying to use the "restore standard config" option that would allow me, I suppose, to have all default rings back, including sms (which I wouldn't be able to change but it's better than having none), but then I can change again normal ring tone via media player.

But I couldn't find help on the detail list of the parameters impacted : would I "loose" something ? it doesn't impact installed programs ? And I'm a bit hesitant before trying this...

you only loose your data on a hard reset...

soft reset keep the data. Have a search for confirmation on the codes and what the hard reset does.

> 4500 files
> 7.5 GB

I guess it's huge... my idea was to replace my current HD mp3 (20 GB) with my phone, so I reencoded all my music in m4a / 48 kpbs and copied it.

Hi Jerome, it is because of a bug with the Nokia N95.

It is because you have "too many" music files on your phone.

The only two solutions are:

1) Set the ringtone from the Music Player options.
1) Remove some music files from your phone (except for the ones you want to set as ringtones!), then set the ringtones, then copy the music files back to your phone.

It's easy with the N95-1 because you can just remove the memory card, set your ringtones, then re-insert your memory card!

Arg, thanks for that clear answer ! I really suspected that...

As you can see I have a huge amount of music... so the solution, if I really really want to put back some standard rings, is really hard to apply due to a huge delete / copy time.

Someone suggested an interesting idea : to have all my music in ogg format and use an ogg player, this format is not recognized by the phone and won't "contaminate" the ring list. The disadvantage is that I wouldn't be able to use these music as rings... but as I said I think delivered tones are better rings that regular music files... and could keep a few ones in known format and have them in the selection list too.

Since my 8 GB are almost full due to this music, maybe I'll try this option with a bigger compression rate, but I need to know if there are good symbian ogg player (like this one ?), with tag based music library, etc.

I thought my spanking new N95 had broken until I googled this forum!

Just popped my memory card out, set up my profiles and put it back in!

bobs ur 'man from...'

So ta!

you lucky n95 v1 owner... But how can it be new then?? It's been a while since v2 is out, with no card reader...

An update about my testing :

very hard to find a good ogg encoder for Mac OS X (ie from mp3 or m4a to ogg without reencoding all into an intermediate format), that works well without burning a % of files (which happened with SoundConverter and OggDrop), finally I found "Max", one of the few true Intel prog (all the others were PPC, very slow to convert) with lots of options and huge number of in and out format, AND without loosing the tags (also happened with my test). One problem is that the minimum for ogg is 48 kbps, which I already have with all my m4a in the phone and I wanted smaller files (so 32 kpbs, which is more than enough for my cloth-eared nincompoops). The ogg produces at 48 kpbs are a bit smaller than equivalent m4a taux, but little difference...

Fomr the player side, I installed OggPlay, which is pretty good, since I still have my 4500 m4a files it indexed them (pretty fast) plus the few ogg files I put there for testing (before I found the option to only index the ogg 😊 ), navigation in the catalog is fast and easy (more than the integrated player). It lacks a search function, or the possibility to type the first letters, like in the standard player (artist, album, etc), with my big number of music, it's not very convenient... Skins can be added, to test.

So I didn't do the step yet, but I'm getting closer.

Just a quick update to let you know that it worked : all m4a deleted and replaced by ogg (lot's of trouble to convert and copy all of it, but I did it) and I have my ring tones back 😊

Now I'm fighting a bit with OggPlayer, which is fast with good navigation system, but
- has strange keyboard use (I can't get used to it), doesn't recognize n95 music keys (secondary keyboard),
- doesn't show the logical level of artist / album / songs when navigating, it's artist / all songs OR albums / all songs, when you have a lot, it's a pain,
- doesn't allow to edit tag from the player, i have to do it again from the computer, and since upper / lower cases differences in tags produces different artits / album in the catalog, it's a pain too
- doesn't have quick search, you have to scroll the whole list, it's a pain too (I have lots of artists / albums there, 7.5 GB of ogg at 48 kbps)
- can't install the skins, even those said "converted to n95" (the only one I could install crashes the player)

But so far it's ok to listen to the music, and as I said it's pretty fast and reactive, which is a good start.

Oh that SUCKS. I've just bought an innov8 ( samsung s60 phone like n95 ) and it has an identical problem.

I don't feel like removing the 7GB of music from my phone just to get a ringtone choice back though.... ARGH!

I got quite used to it finally, oggplay is ok when you get used to it, and i don't expect (for the moment) my phone player to have as many functions as a desktop player so it's ok.

The initial reconversion of your music was the major trouble, but once done, I recompress the music I get as it comes and it's ok, so I'm pretty satisfied with the solution, since I couldn't find any other anyway...
