Guest writer Noel Kennedy takes us on a tour through JoikuSpot, through installation and deployment. Can you really get full Wi-Fi anywhere you like? What are the catches and does he have any reservations?

Read on in the full article.

This is such a cool product.

I've recently purchased an iPod touch and together with my N95 this is perfect.

The programmer has informed me that the final version will include NAT to support other protocols like FTP, IMAP, VPN etc.

It will also include encryption

Getting error message 'certificate may not be valid or time /date on phone incorrect' the phone is OK ,the d/l is also 45kb, any ideas?

unregistered this download is only ... urm, 48KB... the install is 100kb to the phone.

Peter, yeah, once there is further protocol support it'll be great. Quicker than BT PCSuite connection.

Cool product for connecting wifi only devices or multiple devices.

But for my laptop I will continue to use Nokia NSeries PC Suite, Onetouch Internet access with USB wired connection between Vista laptop and N95. Saves battery on N95, quicker and more secure.

yes, I agree jpwbamber . In its current beta stage, its a wifi/multimedia quick browse app. Hopefully though in the next incarnation it will offer the security etc etc, though its never going to help your battery life. 😉

Has anyone tried to connect more than one device at the same time, like you would a home network router? It would be a lot more convenient to have this for occasional/back up use than one of those dedicated routers with the data card.

What a great invention! It works well on my E90. Now, if I only could get 3G coverage where I live, I would ditch my expensive ADSL subscription in a heart beat. Unfortunately, EDGE speed is way too slow when browsing on my Mac... :frown:

imo it'd be more useful to allow a phone w/o wifi to use my phone's wifi connection via bluetooth, kind of like a pc can...

"to connect an iPhone/PSP/laptop in a hurry" - i have to disagree about the "PSP" part of this statement. I tried it with my PSP with no luck. The PSP just doesnt discover the JoikuSpot when scanning in ad-hoc mode. Similarly when trying infrastructure mode(which is to be expected anyway). Otherwise no problems with my Lenovo lap-top running Mandriva Linux.
Have anyone managed to connect a PSP through JoikuSpot? Oh, i have to say my PSP is CFW 3.71m33-4.

Marko Crnkovič, the theme is a vodafone standard theme on the N95 8GB... you can get it here

zlatko - will try get back to you with fw version of the PSP

Hi,
unfortunately, I can't get it to work on my E61 (Nokia update says I'm on the latest firmware). Anyone managed to run it on E61?
It's asking for the access point to use several times, seems to connect fine, but then disconnects again immediately. At no point do I see a Wifi AP...
Regards,
Duncan

Duncan, you are using joikuspot to connect to your 3G connection on the handset yes, not your wifi access point?

It seems to work fine on my E61. Installed no probs and can be accessed as a wireless access point from via a N95 no probs.

The only problem I have is that my Asus EEE can't see it! Its probably something to do with how WiFi is configured on it on the EEE.

@kontraband: Yep, trying to connect through 3G.

@langdona: Could you post your E61 version information (press *#0000# on your phone)? Here's mine:
3.0633.09.04
20-11-06
RM-89

Nokia Update says this is the newest firmware for my model...

Thanks,

Duncan.

Thanks, looks like I'm out of luck here... I'll ask a coworker to install it next week to see if it runs on his E61 (different network)... maybe it's a problem with the 3G access...

Regards,

Duncan.

Sorry, Steve. Thank you, Kontrabant.

Great theme but not suitable for E90. Can't read/see characters on the left (dark) side of the screen (open mode), especially not when writing/reading messages.

Installed ok on my e61 but couldn't get my eee to connect to the access point, just says Pending...

Managed to connect from my thinkpad running xp but there's no connection to the net. I browsed to the access point gateway at 192.168.2.1 and it gave me the following:

============
JoikuSpot Debug

Additional data:

Connect failed
============

I tried to connect to the net from the e61 and it went straight online without asking me which connection to use. Seems like there is a problem with the Joikuspot being authorised to use the available connection.

My e61's info:

3.0633.09.04
20-11-06
RM-89
Nokia E61

Will continue experimenting on other nokia handsets in the house.

Thanks,

Lupo.

This is the killer app I've been looking for. Hope there'll be more bugfixes and releases for testing.

I've got the same issue with unlocked nokia e61 with latested firmware:
3.0633.09.04
20-11-06
RM-89

Joikuspot disconnects after requesting to connect to wireless connection 3 times.
3g connection verified working.

Wondering if there's any debug log or verbose mode to look at..

ISP: MobileOne
Country: Singapore

guys, if you have any feedback you can contact Joiku at info(at)joikusoft.fi. You can refer them here.

and of course continue to post here if you wish.

Wow!! This is wxactly what ive been waiting for to use wth my ipod touch!!!!
Unfortunately I'm having problems.....

I can install and run the software fine on my N95, create an access point and then can actually see and connect to the access point on my ipod touch but as soon as I try to browse/visit youtube/check my email, the wifi signal strength suddenly drops from 54 down to 2 and no connections can be made.

does the program need 3g internet to operate or if you not in an area with 3g coverage...can u use edge

I have the same E61 firmware. I did manage to connect to the internet but every 5 -10 seconds my Nokia keeps requesting which gateway to use (vodafone 3G in my case"😉 so I have to click to accept repeatedly on the phone if I wish to keep browsing on the Dell D620 Laptop using the Intel proset/wireless connection

Hi everyone,

I don't understand much about connection, all I know is push the button of Wifi on my laptop, then I connect to the net.

Jaiko works fine with browsers, both Firefox or Internet Explorer.
But when I am running other application like Microsoft Oulook or Yahoo, those two program can not connect, it always say there's a problem with your internet connection.... 😞
The same thing also happened with other program. So I could only use JoikuSpot for browsing 😞

Anyone could help me to solve this problem???

Thank you very much!!!!

I'm on a Mac. Sometimes some web pages don't load -- I've tried turning on/off lots of preferences in firefox to help lighten the work load but nothing helps. Only some web pages load. Salesforce.com's login page doesn't work, and sometimes even Google doesn't work. Any advice? Much needed. thanks
