I'm sure I remember reading about this but I searched and couldn't find the thread.
I have just bought an 8gb card for my N95 but I was wondering if I can just copy everything from the old 2Gb one and it work. Presumably I would need to:
Turn off the phone
Remove the old card
Open it on PC with a card reader
Ensure hidden items are shown
Copy to new card
Put new card in phone and boot up
Would this work or would the addressing affect it?
Hmmmmm, when you format the phone, and reinsert the MMC it picks everything up again, so would look at new addressing from the card, not the other way.... so so long as your picking up ALL the files from one card to t'other.. should be ok.
You have both cards, so just try it! 😉
I hadn't actually received the card when I posted but it just arrived so I tried it and it seems to have worked fine. I did exactly what I described above and it booted up as normal. All my apps and media are there and work. Most apps were on the phone anyway but Quake and Garmin were on the card and they work too.
Well i aint had any problems with a 4gb card in my n95 on v10 software i just left my phone online through the n95 map app and it downloaded all the maps again as with orange u can get a whole week of unlimited browsing the internet for £5 so if i was u id do that or what ever bundle virgin does
Um, sorry I missed the relevance here
I wish I'd noticed this thread earlier so I could help put you at ease... But anyway...
I had a 2Gb microSD but then upgraded to a 6Gb one. What I did was plug the old card into the card reader on my PC and copy all the files to a folder on my desktop, then put the new card in and copy them all back.
It worked like a charm, and if... somehow... anything went wrong, you have yourself a backup of the card on the PC. I plan to do this again when the 12Gb card comes out (When's that btw?).
good to hear it was plain sailing..
Zippi is always off on a tangent it seems! 😉
If you have apps installed to the mem card you could get problems when you come to remove them.
You may get hanging icons as a result.
You should be fine.
I recently went from a 4GB card to an 8GB and did what zxon did. but I make sure before I start, to show 'hidden files and folders' within Windows and also take off 'hide protected files and folders'. For some reason the Lifeblog folder is protected and only shows when you do both of these. But I guess if you don't use Life Blog then you'll be fine.
I have Tomtom and Garmin installed to the memory card I've had no problem with these.
Zippi has been warned about pointless replies in an effort to simply get his sig seen.
Make sure hidden files are shown and copied across. I have to do this with a 1GB card occasionally and havent had a problem yet.
Yep, I had 'show hidden files and folders' on and 'hide operating system files' off.
Incidentally, I got the card from play.com and it comes with the dinkiestcard reader ever!
Here it is compared to my old card and a (UK) penny

I love those little card readers, they're great, it's on the same lanyard as my 8gig jump drive so I have both wherever I go. My 8gig sdhc card is filled with movies and songs and i have more on the 8gig jump drive as well. So i'll always be pleasently entertained.
thats the biggest 1p coin I have EVER seen! 😉
