Lost everything, contacts etc

So I help a family member setup everything on his N95 8GB, including signed stuff. Then he updates the firmware 🙄

Anyway, a restore fails (I know you shouldnt do that but he did). A sync failed, but apperently he did one before it was updated.

I know it syncs to outlook etc, but Im not at his computer. Does sync put a file anywhere, and if so whats the file extenstion called, Id like to search manually for it.

Also, as he did a backup, is there anyway I can view the contacts from that?

hold on??

Are you saying he cant sync to outlook anymore? Whats it failing on. If all the contacts are still in outlook he should be fine just getting that sync and reinstalling. Easiest way anway. Better than mucking about with fricking backups.

Thats just it, I dont know. Im not at the computer (and cant get to it). He mumbled something about lotus notes - not good - so I figure its easier to simply look for the backup file, which Im pretty sure hes got.

Hmm, dunno where the backup file is stored. Id imagine its in a private folder on the MMC???

have to search for the created time maybe??

Oh thats not the problem, I can probably find it, but what I need to do is open it somehow, so I can see the contacts.

AHhhhhh ... sorry.. from memory it was a real ball ache when I tried to do it from my N80... was a unknown format of file so couldnt find anything to read it.
Might be somwthing available now... but it'd need a search.. cant he just export his lotus contacts into outlook for you ? And you can sync with lotus anyway??

Am I missing something though?? What IS the problem he's having? That he's lost his contacts after updating??

Why cant he re-sync?

Im not sure, he says it gives errors when he tries.

I dont actually know if the contacts are in lotus or not (or outlook!). Thats what nokia suite came up with, and he said hes definatly synced before.

Was just hoping for a program that can read contacts from a backupfile, because by the sound of it either he didnt sync properly, or its lost it somehow. Unfortunatly Im not going over for a while, so I cant look at it.

I'll start hunting for a program that might do it.

Why is it, that dispite being the family techie, people only ask you about something after they have mucked it up, not abut if they should do something in the process?

because thats how it works...

the annoying thing is when they say something like 'I dont like to bother you' which really means 'I dont want to bother you until Ive royally fcuked it up and need to to fix it... now'

When he runs sync, he should be able to sync to Lotus Organiser 5.0 and 6.0, Lotus Notes 5x,6x,7x and OUtlook. SO.. as long as he still can see his contacts in his mail program, just set up a new sync setting and get it to resync. Then you dont need to worry about finding /reading the backup file.

Haha, nah to be fair he just rings and says 'Ive buggered it up'.

Yeah, he should be able to sync, but hes not that techie, and talking him through it when I can see the screen is just too difficult really. Worst case, he will have to wait till I can look at it.

Its pretty simple...

if he opens Nokia PC Suite, The clicks the sync logo, it pops up the sync window.

In there click settings
Then click Create New Settings (It might say are you sure you wish to replace your settings, say yes)
Select the application for contacts (Outlook, Lotus etc)
click next
choose what he wants to sync
click next
Select the mail profile he wants to use (e.g. Outlook)
He has an option to browse for the folders if he has a multi set up but as you say hes not technical like that Id imaging its on default so..
click next
set the range you want to sync to ... 1 week behind 1 forward etc
click next
select the web browser you want the bookmarks from
click next
The click finish

Trust me, its not as easy as that over the phone. Somehow, he gets to screens I dont!

But ta for trying.
