What's using my N95's Internet connection?

From time to time - and one of those times is right now - I notice that something on my N95 is accessing the Internet without notifying me first. Now, I know perfectly well that some apps do this (including ShoZu and Worldmate, both of which I have on my phone), so the concept in itself is not a total surprise.

However, whatever is making the connection, is sucking down quite a few bytes on this occasion - certainly rather more than the above two apps usually do. I started watching the activity via the Connection Manager when I first noticed it, and over the past 20-30 minutes the application (whatever it is) has made at least five separate connections to my mobile network (T-Mobile UK), and has downloaded over 3Mb (and that's only the connections I've noticed). If my network didn't offer a flat-rate-for-fair-use data package (Web'n'Walk), I'd be hopping mad right now, but as it is, I'm just puzzled and a little concerned.

The problem is, AFAIK, Nokia's Connection Manager only tells me how much data is being moved - not what program is doing the moving. I have Y-Tasks installed, which can tell me which apps have hidden processes running, but (again AFAIK) I don't think it can show which processes are accessing the network at a given time, or how much data they are shifting when they do so.

In short: can anyone please suggest how I can identify the offending program? Specifically, is there something like a 'Connection Manager on steroids', which can not only tell me when an app is accessing the network, but exactly which app is doing it? (If there was some way that I could also identify how much data that program has exchanged over a given time period - so that I could find out it was moving bits when I didn't happen to notice it was doing so), that would be even more welcome.

In the meantime, thank goodness for Web'n'Walk, or I might have had a bit of a shock with my mobile phone bills before now... 😮

Discounting the availability of a "connection manager on steriods", only you know what apps you have on your phone and which are likely to be accessing the net. I would suggest going into each one and changing its settings so that it has to ask each time it needs an AP. At least then you should be prompted when it happens.

As an aside, have you got Shozu set up to download ZuCasts? That would be a significant amount of data. Or how about Share Online, to download updates automatically? Just a couple of suggestions. Noting the size of the downloads, I would imagine it is some media of some type getting sucked through to your phone.

Perhaps list all the applications you've installed here? Then we can come up with some ideas.

Thanks for the responses - sorry I didn't come back here earlier (lots going on - the usual 😊 ).

I had thought of going through my apps and trying to find the culprit that way; in fact, I thought ShoZu might be the most likely, but forgot to mention in my post that I'd checked ShoZu's "transfer status" whilst a transfer was taking place, and ShoZu just said it was "activated" instead of "transferring".

Other than that, I could find no other apps which were running (either 'obviously' or 'hidden' - the latter via YTasks), so perhaps it was just "one of those things".

To be honest, I was more interested this time in finding out whether there was such a program as a "Connection Manager Plus" for the N95 (e.g. tells you data transfer, and what's doing it), but it looks like there isn't at this time, so I'll have to rely on old-fashioned detective work next time this happens 😉

Thanks again!

(BTW: the screen on my N95 failed last night, so I'll have to do without it for the next couple of weeks until it comes back from repair... NOOOOOOOOO!!!! 😉 )

Must be global warming. We need to all start hugging trees.

Now that I have to do without my N95 until it comes back from repair, I feel like that's about all I can do - certainly with my old handset 🙄

It just goes to show how much I'd come to depend on my N95 - funny how all these N95 owners are suddenly getting screen failures around the same time... think I'll go for a non-slider phone next upgrade!

Hi all

I have the same problem, but whatever is using the internet only uses tiny amounts of data about 8bytes at a time.

This happens randomly at any time around 40 times a months....now I only get charged a penny each time, but its really bugging me.

I dont have any apps installed on the phone, apart from games, and my browser is set to just use my wi-fi connection and not touch 3G or GPRS, etc.

I get this appearing on my vodafone online billing all the time -

Tue 12 Feb 22:20 INTERNET 6.651 KB 0.01
Tue 12 Feb 22:54 INTERNET 4.379 KB 0.01

Any ideas?

It could well be the assisted GPS connecting to the server to get a faster lock.
