emTube taken down?

Anyone know whether we should read anything into the fact that emTube's web site has been taken down? Legal action from YouTube about unauthorised access to their streams? emTube (direct YouTube video access) continues to work, but it would be great if someone could fill us in with hard news on this, arguably the best S60 app yet created.

Read on in the full article.

Perhaps the fact you can save youtube videos directly to your phone are in breach of copyright and/or youtube "T&C of use"??

But then again, why are all the Firefox extensions not taken down which do the same for the PC?

The FF extensions are less blatant because they can save flash files, not nescessary just youtube. A bit like p2p/torrent - It's hard to take down because some people do use it for legitmate reasons but as we are all aware is flooded with pirated software, music, movies etc.

looks like a 403 error to me which could indicate fail by the webmaster.

Theres nothing blatantly obvious there that says its been pulled for legal reasons.

How longs it been down for?

... and the German site furthermore confirms that download is possible nevertheless.

I trust the consensus that emTube is a great S60 application, maybe even the greatest ever written, but on the other hand I always have to smile when I see how important it seems to be for many people to be able to watch YouTube videos on their mobiles.

Are people that bored? Are YouTube videos that great? Or is it so uncool not to be able to discuss the latest, greatest YouTube video with friends just because somebody was sitting in a train for a few hours - a problem which emTube then solves beautifully?

Maybe YouTube and mobile clients for it will be able to achieve something that nothing was able so far - the breakthrough for smartphones? Suddenly *everybody* needs a smartphone, because man, you know, if you are not able to watch YouTube on the go, well, that's really bad.

Maybe I am just too old to really understand, and I shouldn't really post this 😊

rbrunner, I think a lot of people do genuinely enjoy watching YouTube videos on their phones, and YouTube is probably the best video service at the moment because it has so many clips and they're all free.

However, like you say there's no practical purpose to watching video clips, and it's largely a matter of taste whether you value this app or not. No one NEEDS this in the way they might actually need GPS or VOIP.

Well said, krisse.

Who knows: Maybe now there is not yet (much) practical purpose of being able to watch YouTube on the go, but once the infrastructure is in place for mobile mass-video-viewing, I am sure people will come up with uses that are more important than just pure recreation.

And anyway, for third-party developers like me, best thing that could probably happen is that really everybody suddenly needs a smartphone because mobile YouTube-watching becomes a mega-trend.

So, go emTube, go! 😉

Krisse try Veoh.com, Dailymotion.com and Ovguide.com.

Youtube is quite overated like many other much talked about things, its fine for clips and the general stuff but the others provide much much more. It because of this that i prefer built in flash support for the browser so i can have the choice to view these other flash video sites as well as youtube.

Its the iphone that made all this dedicated youtube app idea popular and its a fine thing to have, but its certainly not the best thing to have on a S60 3rd Edition FP1/FP2 phone. Personal taste and all (Sling Player is my fave).

Youtube is one of the best things on the internet, but its descendants deserve equal praise and support.

One thing to note, Flash 3 seems to be on all of the new S60 models announced, even the cheaper S60 models, so it seems possible that most people will just watch YouTube through the browser. The whole idea of using a separate app may become obsolete.

Speaking as a user of Nokia's internet tablets, I certainly didn't bother using a separate app any more once the browser became capable of smooth YouTube playback (the latest version of OS 2008 is very good, for those who are interested).

Yes, i have an N800 and it still amazes me that i can view any flash video site on such a tiny portable device, at desktop quality too. Fuller than some web browsing in the palm of your hand.

This is why i was so surprised at the very very very minimal coverage of N95 8GB support of full flash within its browser. It may not be as sweet to use as the large screen N800, but it seems to have been implemented well and it must have been the first mobile phone in Europe, if not the world, to have that ability. Imagine the hysteria there would be if Cupertino's baby gets such in-line support.

Anyway, its great that the new s60 devices have it as standard, its bodes a new shift in full internet browsing on even a standard smartphone like the 6220.

The need for a dedicated app may diminish in time, but the ability to save a flash vid and play .flv files is still a great feature of apps like emtube.

Hi there!

No legal issues with YouTube. The official website will be online again soon.

emTube is alive!

Mark

Actually, it's weird, no one talks about this model but when you look at the 6220 specs it seems very very high end:

http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/6220_classic

-5mp camera, autofocus, carl zeiss lens, xenon flash
-VGA 30fps camcorder
-TV Out (which I assume means it has a 3D graphics chip as well)
-80mb free RAM
-built-in GPS

...this is a far more advanced phone than the N81, it costs much less, but it receives far less coverage.

Emtube was a million times better than watching youtube videos through the standard browser on the N95 8GB. Save videos and play them whenever, it had autorotate before the firmware, much smoother switch to full screen. I miss it :'(

untill now I used version 1.0.10 , but since oct 27 emtube only loads titlles and thumbnails down : trying to play it says : unknown/not supported fileformat ! Very sad . However emtube is still be able to play stored flv files . Did Mr. Youtube change their files , or something wrong with my phone ?

Yup, got the same problem. It stopped working about a week or two ago. I think it might be a YouTube thing.

I'm using an E71. Tried Mobitube, but that one stinks, jerky

I had the same issue with my 210 Firmware for my E90. I strongly suspects it's Youtube's doing (maybe something to do with Flash 9 upgrade or whatever). Have had to resort to Mobitubia as well ....

hmmm there must be a lot of us with saved and compatible eMtube videos... but I suppose someone would soon jump on anyone who created a free library... I guess eMtube is just another victim of googleised Utube...

The thing here seems to be the developer got bored and stopped making updates or changes to the site. Youtube isn't going to just sit still and not update their flash, site layout because of a bespoke s60 application that nobody can be bothered to update.

I would imagine the main enemy here is time and probably hosting costs. When the site went down the first time it changed hosting companies by the looks of it and got a new domain then failed to produce anything worthwhile except a holding page. a 150-200k download times x,000 of downloads costs a fair bit.
