So here it is, Quake with full OpenGL | ES hardware acceleration. Enjoy better visual quality and faster speed.
Other versions have gotten some fixes aswell, it's now finally possible to play atleast the official Quake mission packs "Scourge of Armageddon" and "Dissolution of eternity" with this version.
Download from the usual place, and please read the changelog and installation instructions for more information. GLQuake uses the datafiles from the same directory as the other versions, so no need to uninstall anything...
Haha great mate! Believe it or not, I had your page bookmarked on my favourites list, and trust me EVERY day I would check it for updates, started this from mid Dec ( < Big quake fan ), but until recently I formatted my pc and lost the address, but great to hear you are still working on it 😃
Keep up the good work!!
Wish I had my N95 with me so I could try out the update ^^
Is there a simple way of installing this looks very complicated?:con?
Noo 😞 It doesn't work properly;
Made quake1 folder with the apporiate files on root of memory card
Installed PIPS on memory card
Installed Quake on memory card
Ran GLQuake but:
First thing I noticed it took ages to load, then I had avery sucky framerate (approx 2-3 fps) followed by laggy sound and alot of the textures missing, showing up as white boxes...
Its not my data files because It runs perfectly fine with the older version of Quake, without 3d hwa
What posssibly could be the cause for this? I am suspecting my 3d chip as I have dropped my phone before a couple of times, hopefully its not this or I'd need a visit to Orange 🙄
Using N95-1 with latest firmware

Forgot to mentions this, you are running out of memory. You need approximately 28megs of free RAM in order to run the game properly on the classic. Usually it seems to help if you quit the game and run it again if it's doing this.
Okay thanks, ill try it after a reboot and disable some apps.
Also checked and NokiaE3 demo works fine, so can't be my 3d chip ^^ hehe
Ty for the fast reply
EDIT: Restarting game after it makes it work perfectly fine

28MB 😮 Device status shows I only have 22MB on a clean reboot, out of 56MB. Something is seriously hogging up my space. Yet the only running apps I have from the C:\ are Device Status (obviously 😊) and Shozu's medmanshozu.exe. Can't believe the two of them take up that much sapce. Do they? Need something to kill Shozu and see if that makes a difference.
The GL version won't run on my N95. Well, not strictly true; it runs but I can't make out what is going on. The graphics are terrible, with white and green overlay vector shapes everywhere. Pressing the Menu (Left softkey) brings up the menu but there is no text in it and it was only because I'd run the previous version and knew the navigation I was able to exit the program cleanly, without having to remove the battery. So, not sure what's gone wrong.
I just downloaded and installed with no issues. Well that's not entirely true, I ran it and noticed the blotches so I closed the game and re-ran it and it worked fine.

I had exactly the same problem with my N95.
This is what I did in order to fix it:
1. Reboot phone
2. I used a taskmanager (EQ AltTab, since its a lightweight tool) to close all running apps, including HandyTaskMan etc
3. Started Quake with ~27mb of RAM, and it worked perfectly 😊
4. If it is still a bit laggy when you started Quake, close down Quake
5. And re-start it, now it should work fine

Well that's me out then. I can't seem to get my N95 to anything over 22mb of free RAM on boot up. Not sure why, as there doesn't appear to be anything untoward running in the background that I can see. I've killed off Shozu to check that wasn't it (it wasn't and everything else running is off Z:\ and appears legit enough.

The only way to get free RAM to around 30mb is to have latest firmware installed, ie. demand paging is basicly a requirement for the classic.

Been there and did it a long time ago (well, as soon as it came out). Something somewhere is wrong with my phone and I'm not sure what. I must have something running that is being very naughty and is hiding itself from me. Trouble is, I don't know what or where (because it's hiding - ha ha). Time for some extraordinary sleuthing.

From what I can see, you've got two options then
Either hard reset the phone (not recommended lol) or get a processes manager, I'd suggest something like the freeware app. FEXplorer beta, which has a built in processes viewer and option to kill them. Scroll all the way down, and kill all the threads/processes which you think aren't the phone's internal OS files. This is risky though, but the worst you can do is, from what I see, is to crash your phone, reboot/battery out then in should fix that.
But still, try at own risk.
Wow, looks and works perfectly on N95 8GB. Thanks.

good stuff.. it works great! actually.. i had to close my running apps etc to get 26mb free ram and then it worked fine. before that i had the white squares and 2-3fps just like the other guys (on my n95-1). great job!!!
chrsfrwll, yeah that sounds about right.. something must be lurking somewhere thats hogging up the ram. if u cant find and close it, then your best(or worst?) option is to hard rest the phone.. good luck with it..
To the author: now you should write some user friendly multiplayer app. Quakeworld and text based command line is a real pain. Anyway 10ks very much, great job.
still no dummy proof instructions then?

Asssuming you own a N95:
First of all get these files:
1. http://koti.mbnet.fi/hinkka/pips_s60_1_2_SS.sis
2. http://koti.mbnet.fi/hinkka/glquake_v104_armv6_fpu_hwa.sisx
3. The cmdline.zip file from attachment
Then follow this step-by-step:
1. Install 'PIPS 1.22' on Memory Card
2. Then install 'Quake 1.04 with FPU and HWA' on Memory Card
3. Open a File Manager e.g: FExplorer, Y-Browser, etc
4. Make a folder called 'quake1' on the root of your Memory Card
5. In the 'quake1' folder make another folder called 'ID1'
6. In the 'ID1' folder you put your datafiles (see below for more details)
7. Go back to the 'quake1' folder
8. Extract and copy the file 'qmdline.q1' from the attachment *.zip to the 'quake1' folder
9. Close your File Manager and all other running applications to save up RAM
10. Run Quake1, it will go slow probably
11. Exit Quake
12. Re-start Quake and voila!
To get datafiles you got two options:
1. Buy the Quake 1 game, so you can get the data files for the full version of the game
2. You can get what's called a Shareware version, which is a free trial version with limited gameplay. You can freely download this from: ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake/quake106.zip or http://cdn.gamezone.com/pub/gamezone/9/9/93/quake106.zip
Once you downloaded it (this applies to Shareware version only!)
1. Extract the 'quake106.zip'
2. Open the file 'install.bat'
3. It will ask what drive to install the files: Type in 'C' and hit enter
4. Then it asks for directory name, just ignore this and hit enter
5. Finally hit the 'Y' button and it should start installing
6. When done, open My Computer and go to 'C:\QUAKE_SW'
7. The file you want is located in 'C:\QUAKE_SW\ID1'
8. Simply copy the 'PAK0.PAK' to the 'ID1' folder on your Memory Card
Good luck!
Attachments:
cmdline.zip (128 B)
If you have the quake CD, you don't need to install it to your PC to get the ID1 folder and pak file just open 'RESOURCE.1' with winzip or win rar and then drag the ID1 folder out.
Installed quake to my phone last night in a few mins the instructions aren't as complicated at they seem 😃
Now i just need my iGo keyboard to arrive.
GLquake won't run up on my N95
I have 2.0.0.15 firmware. And when I switch on phone I have 29-30mb ram free. The only things I can think of are because I don't have a memory card, I have the quake1 folder on my c: drive. I have in that folder the ID1 folder and then in that I have the pak0.pak file. GLquake is installed also.
When I click on the GLquake icon it literally does nothing, It just stays on the symbian apps menu.
