Hello there again!
I am attempting to receive a fax on my 9290 and having a problem.
The fax machine is getting thru to the 9290 but the 9290 just rings and rings and the internal fax modem never picks up and receives the fax.
Also, if I try to send a fax from the 9290 it just sits in the outbox.
There is a modem built into the 9290, right?
Am I wrong about this?

I have answered my own question with some careful probing at T-mobile and Nokia.
Wow is it hard to get a straight answer out of T-mobile.
Their technicians are doing the best they can but talk about not being forthcoming.

First of all check that your provider's cell net is able to cope with data/fax calls. Second check that this service is enabled on you cell number. Third try to send faxes.
If you have done these two steps allready check that your 9210(i) has all the fax related software that it needs to deal with fax calls!

The dreaded double-post!
Hehe...happens to us all.
Aegeas -
So, what was the outcome/solution to your problem? There are too few 9290's represented not to inform the few of us 😊
After poking around at them it turns out that the 9290 handles faxes like emails. If you are on the T-mobile(voicestream/Powertel) network then you have to add the Fax service from T-mobile at 9.99 per month. What then happens is that T-mobile gives you access to a server that catches incoming faxes to a dummy phone number and saves them for you. You then go out to that server as if it were a dialin connection and download the faxes as if they were emails. It is clunky but functional. When you get ready to send a fax from your 9290 it appears in your outbox and then is sent to that dummy service and they actually fax it to the number you specified in the fax message.
I understand text muddies things up a bit so if you would like further explanation post back and I will be glad to clarify.

Thanks for the explanation. I too could never figure it out even with the help of T-Mobile/Nokia. I was only able to get to the point where I needed to pay the extra $9.99/month  I guess I stopped listening at that point (I don't send/receive THAT many faxes).
Instead, I use a unified messaging site www.uReach.com and download my faxes as emails and view on my 9290. I send faxes via just writing an email to a certain fax address within ureach.com. Works real well for me.
Oh! I should add... I do not work for UReach.com, just a happy customer!
Wow it's expeensive!!!I paid 25 to activate the service and I pay 0.06 per fax!
the annoying part is that back in the 9000il days with powertel (tmobile), is that you paid 2.99 for a data line and 2.99 for a fax line. both of those numbers went straight to your phone! no servers nothing. you could have 3 direct numbers to your phoone for 6 dollars more a month! i guess they started this dial-to-que stuff now....
thats a pain..

Yeah, when I activated this function my operator gave 2 other numbers:fax and data. I have never been asked to use the data number,it's useless!

Solve it 😃
I think you should confirm settings from your operator after which they"ll give you the fax mobile number different from the voice calls. Your modem will shall recognize the fax number and fax messages will be sent through.
Hey Aegeas,
I just got the fax and data line services from tmobile for my 9290. They do give you 2 additional lines straight to the phone. There is no "POLL" service. I can connect straight from my 9290 to another fax number without going through anykind of "polling service".
If you have anymore questions about this feature, let me know,
Hall
Well given what you have said why is there an FAX MODEM entry under the "Extras" area with an option to "activate" it? I note that it says the connection type is "cable 57600" and that the status is "inactive" by default. I want to think that it is an option where you can receive a fax without additional services from T-Mobile. Anyone else care to guess??

Once again I have answered my own question by using the time-honored process of RTFM. According to the Help section you can send faxes from your PC via your phone. I assume what really happens is that the phone downloads the fax from your PC and then sends it out using the T-mobile fax service. Either way, you still need the additional fax service.
Aegeas
that fax support in the "extras" part is to turn your modem to a fax modem for you PC. you can also change the connection to irda. this way you can add your 9290 as a modem in your windows machine and use it.
the piece with tmobile is different. when you have a fax line added, you get a additional phone number that goes to your phone. when some dials that number you see the incoming call with a "F" in front of the number. the 9290 then knows to kick in the fax mode.
hope this helps
If I understand, when you sign up for TMobil's fax service, you get an additional 2 numbers for a total of 3 lines. If one is for voice and one is for voice, what is the third for?
the other line is a data line. it's the phone number your phone will roll to when placing a data call. i'm waiting for mine to go active. i wanna see if you can dial into my phone like i could with my old 9000i. 😊

That should have read 'If one is for voice and one is for data, what is the third for?'
Why would you need two data lines?
no problem. ... 😊
the third one is for fax straight to the 9290. tmobile said that all basic service gets the free fax "poll" service. that means someone can fax you and then you redirect it to a fax machine
This may be the purpose of your other thread but I will ask anyway... why would you (not you but a TMobile customer) need a data line? Since HSCSD is not an option here in the US, data calls use CSD via your voice number. So why would they provide a separate data line? I don't get it!
I don't know either! I even asked the guy in the wireless data group at Tmobile. He had no clue what I would use it for.
On another forum, someone suggested maybe for dial back options for RAS. For instance, you dial your server, authenicate, it hangs up and dials your phone back for security purposes.
Other than that, I don't know.
I wish I could find a way to use it...... 😊

Hi there,
I am curious and anxious to know how T-Mobile walked you through in fixing your problem.
I have the same situation on my 9290 with Cingular, that is my 9290 can not response and receive fax calls. Cingular give me a second number whereby when I send FAX to my 9290 number from a laptop with FAX software, my 9290 would ring and indicate incoming FAX message. But my 9290 could not receive the FAX itself. Any settings I missed?
Sharing your experience on how T-Mobile fixed yours is highly appreciated. Thanks
T-mobile was very vague. Their technicians are the 5$ per hour versions that use a checklist to fix things. The real help came when I contacted Nokia.
Supposedly this is how it works:
T-Mobile will give you 3 phone numbers after you sign up for the fax service. One will be the number that people use when they are sending faxes to you. One will be used by you to pick up those faxes that people have sent to you. And finally one to send faxes. Your phone doesn't actually send a fax, what it does is this: You create a fax, it puts that fax in your outbox and treats it like an email. It then connects to the new outgoing fax number that T-mobile gave you and sends it out like an email. It is the equipment on the other end of that line that receives the "fax", converts it from an email and faxes it out for you to the number you have specified in the fax.
They clarified that your Communicator treats faxes like email and must dial out to this service from T-Mobile to send or receive faxes.
These phone numbers will be unique to you.
Receiving a fax on your incoming fax number should alert your phone ( I could be wrong about this--Hall actually signed up for the service and may be able to elaborate).
I hope I have not borked this and have accurately and reliably conveyed all that Nokia told me. It has been several weeks now since I was last dealing with this, so I may have forgotten bits.
Good luck and I will try to monitor this thread for any further questions.

I didn't know it worked like this!
Is your phone line set up for data calls? T-Mobil  are rubbish its as simple as that! 😃 Vodafone 😃 are the best in terms of customer service, they'll even send a fax to you phone just to make sure its working, there customer service is 100% reliable 😃 and not a rip off! T-mobile is for the occassional user  not for the business user 😃 ! 😉
Im wondering if the way the tmobile rep explained the fax service to you is correct. If I make a fax, send it.. it goes to my outbox, my phone immediatley dials out and connects to the person i'm calling.
I tested this today to my work fax. The number my phone dialed in the call log was the fax at work. The caller ID on the fax machine showed my phone. (thus meaning my phone dialed my work number, and the work fax machine picked it up from that phone)
I know tmobile does have a fax polling service with all standard phones. Its like a "mailbox" for faxes that some sends to you so you can foward. When you get the data and fax line service, (which is required for the 9290 to send out faxes), i think it dials directly to the fax number your dialing.
as far as the data line.. useless unless you use it for a server call back feature
if i pick up my home phone and dial my fax number giving to me by tmobile, my phone doesnt make a ringing noise but, i see it light up and say incoming fax... then my communicator picks up and makes a fax tone. so it is dialing straight to the phone..
hope this helps...
I'm experiencing a problem with faxes...
When I choose a document to be sent as a fax...I open it and I send it as fax...when the 9210i finishes to transfer the document in the message outbox I open it and notice that the document is not entirely there. I see the beginning and the end but I can't browse up and down the page!!! Any hints?
