I wanted to try out Rotateme. On trying to install I get "Certificate error". Searching the forums I see that I need to self sign it, but Nokia have now removed this facility.
So two questions:
I have my security settings to let me install any app, signed or not. So why won't it install?
Is the currently available version useless until samir manages to get it signed by Nokia?
Ian.
Rotateme needs to be signed with your imei. Go to symbian.com and see the steps to do that. Its an hard task, if you are not a developer...
Don't you read other postings ?!?!?

Yes, I did and if you read my message you will see that I had searched the forums. Since Nokia seemed to have removed the ability for people to generate self signed certificates, I can't sign the app myself.
Apart from asking someone else who already has the ability to sign apps to sign it for me, it would seem that I can't install it.
Perhaps with your superior knowledge you can point me at a thread which explains how to install an unsigned app that I can't sign myself.
Ian.
Igb, he wasn't really being rude to you, though I can understand the frustration - there have been loads of threads on this topic already. There is no way to install unsigned applications on the N95.
What has happened is that for whatever reason, symbian signed no longer allow random people to generate certificates that they can use to sign their applications.
The only people that can are those who have laid out the cash for a developer ID, none of these people are likely to sign your application since symbian will probably revoke their access if they do it too often.
What does this mean? It means that ~nobody~ can sign any applications unless they have a developer ID. Simple as that. There are no other threads or support forums that can bypass this.
No certificate from symbian that includes your IMEI, no install of unsigned applications. A developer ID will set you back $200 US.
UPDATE:
Open Signed Online is set to become active relatively soon. The kicker is this:
You can only sign applications from the non-protected UID range. The vast majority of applications are from the protected range (including stuff like rotateme), some have an odd mixture of UID's.
Pretty smart move by symbian. I don't expect it will slow the piracy rates too much, maybe for just a few days until people figure out the CRC's
Hello, I just received my N95 8Gb this week and I am beginning to learn about these certs and signs issues.
What I don't understand is why freeware applications such as lightsaber don't get installed. Are they free or not?
They are free, but the certificate can be ended. So change the date of yourphone to another previous date, and install again.
Hi again I tried with lightsaber 1.5, but not succeeded.
With todays date says "Certificate error. Contact the application provider". If I change the phone's date to august 2007 says "cert may not be valid yet or may be expired or wrong date adjustment".
I'll keep on reading other posts. I found an interesting post from which I have understood that I will not be able to install applications (even if free) unless I have a certificate and the application has been signed. Since it is not possible to get certificates now, lots of possiblilities of my N95 8Gb are gone to the trash.
Regards
Two things: it must have a certificate! But the one can be expired. If you not succeed with August, is a try and error process. Try another that.It must be a date after the publication of application but before the certificate expires, if it already had one!
Thanks nj7. It seems that I still need to read a lot more because more newbay questions come as i receive answers. Does my N95 come with a certificate from factory (or Carrier), or is the application itself the one that is certified?
Tried more. For dates until 04/01/2008 says cert may not be valid yet. From 05/01/2008 says certificate not valid. Contact you provider
Each application must have its certificate. Its signed one by one. Another thing... it must be an S60v3 application. Old ones, from S60v2 devices cant be installed, because they are not compatible... just in case you miss that!
Dear sir,
The apps are for the correct Symbian version.
I just found out the problem. What a +*@#~~ I am!!! The settings at the application installer was in install "just signed". I changed to install "everything" and now Lightsaber works. I guess that if I leave that setting I must be very carefull whith the installations I try.
That's for you help and patience.
