That's not right................ is it?
I am being Charged by Orange for connecting to my WLAN.......
hell no... unless it was some orange type wlan... in your house...
they wouldnt know...
That's what I thought, However I can't seem to get any sense out of the techy/sales/customer support guys.
They keep saying things like "Of course we charge, you are using GPRS" etc. When i explain to them that I am NOT using GPRS OR Orange internet, they freeze and don't seem to understand what I mean.
I even gave an example of buying a Sony Laptop, using it on my WLAN and then getting sent a bill by Sony. They still wouldn't have it.
I suggested that my Orange branded phone was set up to connect using GPRS even though my own WLAN was selected.
I then just walked into a world of "Speak to Nokia, we don't support the wi-fi function" 😡
I'm not a techno retard but this attitude baffles me.
My indicator that all was not well was when I got charged for 13Mb of data. On my previous phones (N70 & N73) I used to rack up about 2MB a month. Both of thoe phones, as you know, don't support Wi-Fi and the only difference in my phone useage is sitting at home playing with the novelty that is, using your N95 as another node on your WLAN.
I'm at a loss as to what to say to these people.
Any suggestions or settings that I can look at.
Just as an aside, I have been told by some muppets at Orange that Bluetooth is chargeable!!!!! Go figure 😉
In settings > Connection > Packet data is your packet data connection set to when needed or when available?
if its set to when available your phone will allways be connected to 3g.
if its set to when needed it will ask you when you use an app that requires 3g.
my 3 phone was set to when available when i got it. eats the battery and racks up kb's of data slowly
Thanks for that Vin, It's not the problem though 😞
Any other suggestions anyone?
I just want to make sure that it's not something stupid before I start on Orange again. 😉
np i try hehe
have you been using the maps application and dowloading map data?
sending emails with attachments?
er i'm stuck now :/
Go into your browser's options and check which connection it's set to use.
Ofcourse its not Right... what nonesense!
You will just have to find a better way to explain to those ignorant fools... but whats puzzling is that you say you are using wi-fi... if that is true then how would orange ever find out? unless you are using gprs/edge??
give a rude sign to Orange.. what crappy customer service..
- who is your ISP ?
- assuming you have a Wifi router @ home .. when you connect to it you should see a little [+] symbol if its an open connection (not recommended) or n[+] the n is supposed to be a padlock - a secured wlan connection.
- your web browser should be set to this access point (best define it) or "always ask" .. just in case.
Hope you get it sorted ..
Cheers!😊
if you are using your private wifi at home then how the hell would orange know?? something cant be right here are you totally sure it is using wlan?
when you connect to your wlan... what are you connecting with and do you see the WLAN icon come on in the right corner... or the 3G/3.5G icon fire up in the left???

WiFi icon may only be visible from the idle screen, so tap the menu button twice.
Menu -> Tools -> Log -> Navigation Button Right -> Options -> Filter -> Packet Data Conns. -> Select
-- now you can see, if Orange right or not.
Pheonix SZ wrote:WiFi icon may only be visible from the idle screen, so tap the menu button twice.
true, this is application dependant. Some applications will show the icon for the appropriate connection type, whereas some may not at all.
Check your manual for the different symbols associated with each data connection type. Most times, these symbols are displayed in either the upper left or right corners while they are in use but the application may display it somewhere else within it's interface.
yeah, best to launch the app and menu menu to get back to standby as phoenix said then.
The Orange helpdesk employees are probably not the most technical educated ones. (which helpdesk is...) However, I'm afraid they are probably right regarding your data usage on their network. There is no way they could have detected your network usage if it wasn't carried over their GSM, GPRS or UMTS network. The data counters are only counting the data traffic that is carried by certain systems deep in the Orange network.
What I can think off is that some applications have their own setting for the access point they use. Realplayer is one I actively know. And this setting influences youtube. Are you using youtube by any chance?
If one of these appliations is set to Orange, you may think you are using the wifi, but for part of your data you are using the Orange network.

Bert

Good point. Some applications will continue to use the same access point as defined at the time of it's first use. Check the settings on all your applications and ensure that they are not set to use the Orange data network as default.
Some applications, such as "voicemode" automatically use your GPRS connection by default. A wonderful user of this forum notified me on a way to get around this by created a "fake" access point and assigning the application to use that one instead.

What am I looking at here dude? Is it what my Phone has been doing? It simply says
Pack. Orange Internet -> Out -> 57kb etc etc.
There is a total since I have had the phone which says
All Sent Data 3.28 MB
All Recieved data 7.71 MB
I presume that includes MMS as well as GPRS internet access?
Oh God this is confusing, but only because it seems Orange and their untrained chimps have told me totally and utterly crap information!
Anyway, on with it 😃
Just to clarify a little.
Wifi is completely unrelated to your mobile network provider. There is no way Orange can or should know what you are doing over your Wifi or how much data is transferred.
The only way Orange can be charging you is if somehow you are connecting packet data instead/as well as wifi. You need to find out what applications are connecting to the internet and check their connection settings in that app. If all else fails, a hard reset might help as it will reset everything to default, or consider debranding as that will get rid of any dodgy Orange software that might be connecting over packet network when you don't want it to.
DEBRAND ! DEBRAND ! DEBRAND !
Because the 95-1 ain't worth a rat's without Demand Paging, as introduced with v20 firmware.
Do it, transforms a smartish-device into a bona-fide smartphone.
I am with Orange and also use WiFi and I can say they have never billed me for my wlan usage.
The best thing to do is check every app your running and make sure its set to wlan not Orange Internet. The most obvious one is Maps as that downloads maps from nokia if you haven't preloaded, so if you have tried the satnav away from your wlan then you have almost deffinently used a fair bit of data with that.
N95 dude wrote:What am I looking at here dude? Is it what my Phone has been doing? It simply saysPack. Orange Internet -> Out -> 57kb etc etc.
"Pack. Orange Internet" means that the particular item you have just listed is NOT using your wifi, it is indeed using your Orange data plan.
The wifi entries will be called something like "WLAN xxx" where xxx is the name of your wifi router.
As mentioned there is no way you should be charged by Orange for WIFI use. It's impossible...
Most likely you have some apps that is connected to your Orange GPRS.
Best thing to do since you don't know what is causing the charge is to hard reset the phone with *#7370# (default code is 12345). Remember to backup what you need excluding settings.
I agree- I'd start fresh... reset and then ensure you set everything up to always ask how you want to connect. Make sure you choose wifi when it comes to it and you should be away. If they keep charging you, check they're not also billing you for using their gas and electric 😊
Christ 😱 Nearly ended up paying for their 2008 Staff Xmas party then, only called my Orange Answering service!!! LOL
