First impressions of Navigon on N95 8gb

Bought this software last night and let it download overnight as 2.6gb!

Came to install it tonight and it kept asking for my memory card. Nokia PC suite was running. Rang the UK call centre to be greeted by a German asking "sprechen sie deutsch?" Told them no and a minute later a heavily accented German came on the line.

Essentially he had no idea how to resolve the issue and gave me a call reference and said someone would be in touch! Great.

Decided to unplug the PC cable and plug it back in and this time used data transfer mode. When I started the Navigon software it saw my 8gb as a removable drive. Followed the instructions and installed the British Isles maps. The programme told me to remove the card and put it into my mobile. I therefore finished the programme and unplugged the phone. Got a message about not finishing the data transfer properly.

Went to app manager and opened Navigon. Asked me to register which I did at the 3rd attempt. Typed in my home postcode and asked to show on map. It said found gps receiver (internal one as I don't have an external one) and locked on immediately. Wow much impressed.

Typed in my work address and it showed me on the map perfectly. Started navigation and it told me to make a u turn in 175 yards. WTF!!

I will try it on the way to work tomorrow and report back.

So far, for £70, very mixed feelings. Will see how it works on the open road!

Cheers

Stick with it, its basic but the navigation I found to be very good, better than Garmin in fact.

Unfortunatly its too basic. It doesnt find toll roads (it doesnt think the second severn crossing is one, its always been one!) and as there no POI adding, you cant change this.

I do wonder if the new maps make it any better, but Im not shelling out to find out.

I do have an email addy for them, if you dont fancy talking to another accented german when you need support. PM me if you want it.

In the settings it now asks if toll roads are permitted so I suppose the latest version is different although I've not yet tried it with a toll road.

Going south of Birmingham next month so I'll see then. TBH my old Navman doesn't like the M6 toll and keeps telling me to get off at the next junction!

As sat navs go I've found it works very well and I am impressed with it. I'm not sure what you mean by basic as if you read the manual it does everything and more my Navman does. Plus I can still make and receive phone calls.

If you mean traffic assist I think this is an over valued benefit. I used to have a Toyota Avensis with inbuilt sat nav with TA and I was always in the queue before the TA came on! Fat lot of use.

Cheers

Car manuf. satnavs are on the whole, pretty bad.
TomTom traffic is bang up to date and I've been very impressed with it.
Couldn't live without it - as I'm in the busy SE.

Ive got the latest version (they havent updated it for a while), and I have it set to avoid tolls. However the severn bridge one, which has been on ever since it opened, it still sends me to.

By basic I mean it doesnt have any sort of option for speed cameras, not its own nor custom, or any other sort of POI for that matter. Its only got its own rather poor list in.

It doesnt allow you to choose a point on the map as a destination either, just lots of little things like that its missing. However it is a solid in navigation.
