I am new to the site but hope to use it often as it seems to be an excellent source of information.
I'm totally new to modern day mobile phones and wondered if someone could help me (I am probably the stupidest newbie to post a message here ever!). I have just recently got myself a Nokia N95 8GB phone as it was offered to me as part of my contract but all I've ever done with a mobile before is make calls and take pictures! After browsing many forums and many youtube videos I've begun to realise just what this phone is capable of, with all of the cool applications and features available for this device but am totally stumped at where to start. For instance, I'd like to get the accelerometer application and the Moving Ball and RotateMe installed onto my phone. I check some of the user guides/FAQs, which are great, but they give links to various downloads and what to install, but I need to know WHERE to install them! I know I'm being an idiot, but do you need to set up certain folders in your phone's directory on your PC before installing these files?
Can anyone offer any pointers? Maybe I should have stuck with a brick sized Sagem 😊
AHAh no... I can safely tell you thats not the dumbest question here.
You dont need to install .sis/ .sisx files to a specifc created directory on the whole no... its done automatically for you.
You will have a problem at the moment with apps like rotateme that need signing (thats a whole new thread you dont want to go into)
Basically, you either use Nokia PCSuite to install the apps you download to your pc over BT or over the usb cable, or you use your N95 to download directly... and off you go.
BTW, check the sticky out at the top of this forum for some good apps.

just an FYI, you have an s60 smartphone, so it can take a while to figure everything out and master all the apps available, etc. kinda like a new computer you buy, you gotta add programs and tweak things to your liking. so just read as much as you can and it will come to you slowly but surely. read these forums for great info too. and search.
your phone can multitask, run Garmin GPS, etc tons of stuff. just gotta learn it all. get handy taskman and smartlight too.
Yeah that is really good advice, you're spot on I think. Just a bit daunting when you know so little and can see that there's literally tonnes of information to get your head around. Will get there, slowly but surely :icon14:

While I'm on, does anyone have any form of protective case/cover for their N95 8GB that they would recommend? I'm scared of scratching my new toy 😊
not a case fan myself, but when I was building I used a crystal clear hard case... was useful
one knock and it died on me
I have the official Nokia Leather case for my standard N95. Its really nice - Think they do a version for the 8GB version too.

My case was battered, but phone was fine... only dropped it a few times mind.
should have said the crystal case,
i've dropped my phone a few times and it's vibtrated it's way off my bedside table, only the back comes off,
I ordered a leather case - the CP235 (maybe the same one you're referring to KJH...)
Was dirt cheap so if it's crap no harm done 😎
I really need some help with rotateme. I cannot sign it, i cannot get this on my phone. I really want this app. Can anyone help me. I have followed all the tutorials and I have been unsuccessful. Version 30 firmware is out there already for generic phones and it contains Auto-rotate, so it shouldn't be too long before the various operators release it (I'm assuming that you have an operator branded phone).
Other than that you could debrand your handset and then update it via the Nokia Software Updater in PC Suite (see sticky's on front page).
I actually bought my N95 8GB unlocked and unbranded from Brst Buy. I updated the software right out of the box thinking I would get auto rotate. I didnt. I de-branded it by changing the product code and the software installer said that there were no new updates available. I used the EURO1 code for the N95-2 8GB and it didnt work. So, what now?
