Enthusiast Symbian blogger Norman John, based in Germany, has been reviewing the Sony Ericsson P1i - it's refreshing to hear a fresh opinion on this UIQ 3 smartphone. His verdict? It's a 'strong multimedia smartphone' but its 'UI is too tricky'. And he rightly says that you should ditch the built-in Opera for the also-free Opera Mini.

The P1i UI with Gdesk and Tweak Peaks is actually not that bad. The keyboard is superb once you get used to it. But Active Sync is not as good as Mail for Exchange (e.g. Active Sync does not deal with To Dos). The PDF solution is not as good as that used for the E90. But overall the small package of P1i is very handy (!). If SE could increase the size of the screen, increase the resolution and add HSDPA remove some of the over packaging (like the silver metal) I think this format would be an ideal solution for business people.
have you tried the new pdf+ version??? its much better than the original one 😉
agreed...gdesk makes the phone much more user friendly...nevertheless...UIQ can be difficult at start for people used to other UI, like S60...but same goes the other way...i find s60 to be unfriendly, but i only use UIQ phones for 2 years, so...
I am more used to S60, but I had bought this phone. But I sold it within a month and went for an S60 phone instead. It is not that there is something terribly wrong with the phone, but I couldnt get used to some things
for example the UI is too inflexible - i would spend an hour organizing all my apps into different folders, but at the next restart all the third party apps would automatically go back to the Tools folder. I couldnt move built-in folders around either like in S60.
I didnt like the format of the today view either. I find S60 3rd phones better in this respect.
I also had a problem with the phone hanging when I tried to answer a call.
There was also that known issue about uninstalled apps getting reinstalled at the next restart.
On the good side,
The autocomplete feature combined with predictive text was quite useful for typing long messages.
The phone looks quite classy from behind (the side with the camera)
Sebastian, the problem of apps trying to install for themselves also happens on s60 v3, and has the same exact answer: delete some "private" folder on the memory card (dont remember which).
Regarding apps organizations in menus...well...jah already answered...gdesk is free and let you what you want in that respect...you can even have touch screen shortcuts to send sms to a particular person, etc...
Finally...the fact the phone hanged when you tried to answer a call - clearly a problem with that phone you used
As a P1 user, every so often I see an article saying I should move to Opera Mini and every so often I give it a fresh try. I always go back to the built in Opera.
Having tried Mini again, I must say I still found it unusable in comparison. The main reason being the lack of fit-to-screen justs makes it so unwealdy in comparison to the built-in Opera. Or am I missing an option?
I'd better rephrase that last paragraph. Fit-to-screen is there but is just very complicate to use with lots of menu digging, screen refreshing (involving more menu digging) etc.:frown:
unregistered, yes i must admit that panel of 15 shortcuts in the standy screen and the kind of possible shortcuts was simplyamazing. Something i wish my s60 phone had.
