15 replies · 3,738 views · Started 14 March 2008

just bought an n95 from ebay and put my sim card in. had a bit of a mess about with it, checked my balance this morning and it said 98p although I'm sure there was a lot more last night. checked it again later and it was 0p. not sure what happend but put 10 and now within about 2 hours it stands at 4.
I've not called or text anyone. called orange but they cant' help until after 24 hours. where is my credit going!!!?? could it be some sort of wap drain?

you haven't left your Internet browser on over night or something like that have you?

are you sure its a legit n95

hi Casper, thanks for the reply. The seller seemed legit. the internet thing was my first thought but I can't find any way of making sure the net browser is off

hold the left menu key and it gives a list of open files.

i wouldn't use it and see if it is legit, try updating the firmware using the PC Suite.

I held down the left menu key as suggested and it just says standby. I googled the problem and someone suggested holding down the red key which will then give the option to close the connection. this appears to have done the trick. I tried a firmware update earlier but it said i already had the latest version and did i want to continue so i said no but I think I may do it after all. so would a firmware update get rid of any hidden programs on the phone?

You can count yourself lucky that you weren't on a contract sim card or you wouldn't have realised you were connected and God only knows what the charge would have been when you eventually found out.

Data charges are absolute robbery and your phone should beep and flash every time you are being charges IMO. It's a disgrace that you were being charged and not even realizing it. My cousin raked up over £20 in data charges as he was messing around with Nokia maps and little did he realize that the maps are downloaded to a cache folder on your phone via the internet. There's a tip for you 'Don't balls about with maps'!

Set your internet settings to 'Always ask' when a network connection is required.

Not sure that updating your firmware will make much of a difference. Always good to keep it updated though 😊

it seems that pressing the red key was only a temp fix but I've updated the firmware and so far no more credit has gone so hopfully thats it sorted. I don't know what to do about the net now, I daren't use it again :frown:

Make sure you download Nokia Maps for your area to your PC then transfer them to your N95.

Orange PAYG data charges are horrendous - they charged me 6.00 for four very small jpegs and a word file a while ago!

Wifi is the way!

Check that the GPRS Data (==) or 3G connection logos are not permanently displaying. Go to tools -> connections -> packet data -> and set to When Needed

If you have been using Nokia Maps, or other GPS apps, ensure that the Assisted GPS is not enabled to use network connections.

If this doesn't help, I would format both the internal memory and the memory card to ensure you don't have some unknown application installed.

becareful there is a symbian trojan called trojan redbrowser it' sends premium rate sms without any knowledge from you or trace
i found it in a app i scanned before installing to my phone i have details somwhere what i got from my norton antivirus i'll find them and post the info
i already posted details on a diff site
this guy could easy install trojans to phones he's selling after setting up a premium rate phone line
it could be somthing else but the info is worth posting any way

I contacted orange and it turns out that it was all to do with the camera. when I took a picture it would ask if I wanted to upload it to gallery. thinking it was refering to the phone gallery I clicked 'yes'. What it was actually doing was uploading the pictures to an online gallery and charging me a fat fee for the privilage. The adviser told me this is a common thing people do with the n95 and what I should do is cancel and the picture is then saved to the phone.
expensive lesson but well learned

bonerp wrote:how do you switch this off then???

you have to go to 'photography' and accept the terms and conditions first. then you go:
application->
photography->
options->
settings->
disable photograph service

once you've done that you won't be asked to upload to gallery everytime you take a picture

redbrowser is NOT a symbian trojan.

The Norton Details as follows for future readers:
Trojan.Redbrowser.A is a Trojan horse that sends premium-rate SMS messages. It is a Java Midlet application that runs on mobile devices which have the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) installed. It may be downloaded to the compromised device from the Internet or via Bluetooth. It may also be transferred to the device from a computer.

The Trojan arrives as the following program, which attempts to trick users into believing it is a legitimate application that allows users to visit WAP sites without using a WAP connection:
RedBrowser.
