While not nearly as many people may have died in the Space Shuttle Columbia as have died in other disasters, 7 is still 7 more than anybody would like, 7 too many.
Condolences to the families and friends of those who have died, I'm sure.
What are your thoughts on the matter?
On a more cavalier note, what will be the impact on the American space programme? Is the fleet of shuttles too old? Should governments stop spending on space research?
Maybe if everybody spent money on understanding our place in the Universe and less on blowing up the people that are on earth, things would be happier?
Is this an acceptable price of progress?
Personally I think 7 people died who didnt need to die. They are going into space on technology that is decades old and relies on getting things perfect to get back down again. Because the Russians stopped fighting for space supremacy was no reason for NASA not to move the boundaries forward in safety. Just because 112 landings worked in the past doesn't mean that they all can, lets face it how awkward it must be to get that shuttle perfect they are lucky to have a 1/113 rate of accidents.
my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the crews of the said space shuttle.
Some people are already trying to get bucks by selling 'pieces from the shuttle' in internet auction. There's just no limit to human greed.
The crew knew the risks, and was willing to take them. I just hope the families of those astronauts get comfort somewhere.
