n95-1 gone haywire

So, today when i turned on my n95 i noticed that it does everything on it's own now....the phone would randomly scroll thru the menu and select things and then call random numbers, start apps, etc. etc. I tried to do the 3-button reset thing and it didn't work. Right now, i'm trying to reinstall v.20 but it's stuck at the "nokia" screen when you install a new FW. Any of y'all ever experienced this? Any suggestions? I can't take it to Nokia since I'm in TX and this is an import....this sucks....

update: I just tried reupdating it and it failed and now I have a bricked n95....it's stuck at the nokia screen with the backlight off. I tried to turn it on by the 3 button method and it doesn't work... 😞 any suggestions?

Sounds like someone's Bluetooth hacked your phone.
Did you accept any BT connections ?

It's important to update with the USB cable connected directly to PC rather than a hub.
The battery also needs to be charged enough and the phone in General profile.

How far through the update process did you get ?
To the 'Downloading update' progress bar ?

The green/star/3/power-on/ reset requires holding all three buttons for 3 or so seconds, then you'll get a grey 'Formatting' progress bar.

If this won't work, take it to a Nokia SC for recovery.
If it's within warranty, you should get it for free.

i haven't accepted any BT connections at all. I already tried the 3 button thing and it still doesn't work... this sucks...

it gets to the downloading part and then it goes to 'recovery.' i follow the instructions but 'recovery' either pops up again or it's lost it's connection....

I doubt its anything to do with bluetooth. Theres been a number of cases similar to this where its been liquid on/in the phone. Presumably making connections, hence the odd activity.

If its possible its been near any water, or worse some other liquid, it could be worth opening it up to see if theres any trace of it.

As said, take it to a nokia service center. However make sure the water damage sticker hasnt turned pink.

yeah, there have been a few users with the above problem. Not a bluetooth hack, just a bit of moisture on the board sending things a bit wild, take it back or take it apart 😉

The little white sticker under the battery, should be ... white. If its changed colour they will moan about moisture.

alright thanks for the replies. the only thing i can think of that could cause the phone to go nuts is the fact that it's very humid here in Houston....but that's all.

Do you guys think that Nokia in the U.S will take my phone and repair it even though the phone's from SE Asia?

try your local one... different continents have different time frames but if its easy enough to get the the usa one... go try it.

bad news, nokia wouldn't repair since the phone wasn't from the U.S.

My stepdad is going to Norway this sunday, do you think that the Nokia Service Centers there will repair it even though it's an asian n95?

haha, i wish but he's going for a business trip....

well...i have no choice now but to buy a cheap pre-paid phone and stick my sim in there....so long smartphones! until i get money again! lol....sigh...

Im going out the door at the moment so forgive me for not searching thru the posts but have you done a hard format and then reinstalled the firmware???

Timremix wrote:tried both and during the reinstallation of the FW the phone crashed so it was bricked... 😞

Crashed ?

You sure it didn't 'come unplugged' ?

You read of so many bricking stories and wonder how the hell it happens.
I think some of them are down to the non-realisation of exactly how critical the flashing process is.

no, my mistake was that i tried to flash it while it was still in haywire mode. i know how critical flashing devices is as i've flashed my gadgets many times. I thought that flashing it would stop all the processes in the cell at the moment. oh well, whether it was still in haywire mode or bricked i'm screwed either way because i'll need to take to a nokia care center which we don't have it here in the U.S.

no dude... I meant what happens when you hold down all the buttons??

vibrate? immediate boot on pressing power as opposed to having to hold it for a couple of seconds??

Last hard reset I did I needed to hold down the keys for ages.
