1. On the active standby desktop, the calendar reminder takes you straight to the detail of the entry - is there any way of making it go to a month view of the month in question instead?
2. I'd like another row of active standby applications. The limit seems to be 7. I'd like to see another row of user selectable applications/shortcuts below. Possible?
3. Occasionally my back light stays on after using the phone. I mess with the slider a little and eventually it goes to sleep - I'd like to know what causes this or if it's a known bug?
4. The camera quality is dreadful. It might be a 5 Mega pixel camera but it's not on a par with even an average compact digital camera of 3 Mega pixel. There seems to be a lot of compression taking place on the images. Shots at the 5MB setting often weigh in around the 600k mark. Way too small for a decent quality snap of this dimension. It's hard to know whether the optics are fine and the compression is ruining the pictures or the optics just aren't up to par. Either way, the quality of the camera given it's specification is a disappointment. I hope a future firmware finds some way to address this problem? Or is there a 3rd party camera app that perhaps takes longer to process the images but yields better results?
Can any of these niggles be solved?
What firmware are you on?
My camera has no problems like you describe, can you post a few photos up?
Do you have the camera set to take photos at full 'Print - 5M' quality (settings menu in camera app)?
Hi 3shirts, I'm using the latest unbranded firmware (v15). Settings in the camera set for 5M large.
Here is about the best photo (in terms of quality, not content!) I have managed with the N95 8GB. File is only 520k. I would expect a much larger file size for an image of this size.
v15? So your an N95 8GB user then.
1. annoying I agree. But thats the way with active standby
2. Nope. Not configurable
3. Shouldnt be a reason for your back light staying on, unless you have it plugged in to something, or your still in the call?
4. Camera quality isnt that bad, as long as it an inatimate object. Moving objects, just forget it.
1. Make Calendar one of your seven standby icons, and the default view in Calendar as "Month". Clicking on the icon (rather than the entry) will take you to the month view.
2. Look at an application called SkyeQuiKey. Not quite what you're after, but it may suit your needs.
3. Check your settings for backlight and screensaver.
4. Always change the sharpness setting to "Soft" This seems to reduce the compression effects. Unfortunately, the Camera application doesn't keep the setting when you exit 😞
Bear in mind that a proper camera will always beat a camera phone. That said, Nokia's decision to compress the hell out of photos is a poor one.
robgreg - cheers for the camera tip - I'll give the soft option a go. Perhaps the ability to save settings will be in a future upgrade...?
I did think about changing one of the active standby apps to the calendar but my reason but as it's not possible to add a greater number of shortcuts (7 being the limit) it means a valuable slot is lost. Ho hum...
1. if you open the calander and it shows the detail view, just press * STAR key which toggles between month view. easiest way i've found.
2. cannot add more icons.
3. are you using smartlight? if not, you definitely need to install this app. i havent had any troubles with backlight staying on.
4. my camera quality is awesome. check out my flickr and compare if you want. www.flickr.com/rogerpodacter.
search the first couple pages. all pics taken with n95-3. some are even marked as camera test for forum posts like this one to compare. the 8GB does have a new firmware compared to the n95-3 and it added new camera changes to photos. maybe you are experiencing this. nothing you can do about it most likely.
RogerPodacter - reagarding your photos - what sort of file size are they when you take 5M Large images? It's hard to gauge from the Flikr site as they are re-sized.
Will take a look at smartlight...

Never knew about either of these! Thanks for the tips (Rep +1)

yeah, I found the star option by accident.. its useful though.
Not heard of the smartlight... why didnt you offer it to the sticky! 😉
As far as the icons go you can install an app called Tracker which will let you have as many shortcuts as you wish.

if i leave the camera on auto mode, the file sizes are about 600KB just like yours. when changing modes, pic file sizes have gone up to 1.3MB per pic. it depends on the amount of things going on in the pic too. there isnt any ryhme or reason i can see. but yet the camera does use compression to help out, so its not exactly as good as a stand alone camera. but from the results i get with my pics, as seen on flickr for example, i'm more than satisfied with the quality considering its my phone too. and the fact that my pics are auto geo tagged with GPS coordinates where the photo was taken and uploaded to flickr, i'm totally happy!
there should be an option on my flickr where you can select ALL SIZES or something. i dont know if it allows the original size. but you sure can blow it up to something larger by using the options for each pic.
and smartlight is a must have app. it keeps the backlight on indefinitely anytime a screen or app is displayed. and when the home screen is displayed the backlight just times out like normal. should be built into the firmware, but its not. i have smartlight copy forever that i got long time ago. i dont know if its free or not. just glad i have my copy!

Thanks to this thread, I've just bought it. Can't believe I've been without it for so long. 😉 Makes life so much easier.
what features are on smartlight ?
can it be configured to indvidual apps ect?
i recommend tektronic phone shortcuts just make it a defult shortcut on standby screen to open up shortcuts quickly also allows you to assign hot keys to apps and start up apps on boot up ect
its very good i'll try and find officiol info and pictures
i think it cost me $5 when i first got my 1st N95 8GB
there is probably a free app that does simlar things knocking about but i've not come across so far

Smartlight is fairly basic in that if you have any screen other than Standby active it disables the backlight cutoff. It's good but I've found it doesn't work with Profimail, which is annoying.
Re the tektronic app, I use Skyquickeys which lets me get any app, web page or contact with just a few key presses. Very good and no need for defined hotkeys.

yeah smartlight just keeps the backlight on for ANY screen except the main screen. so if you click menu button, the backlight wont shut off until you go back to main screen. any app keeps the backlight on. luckily i have a copy from long ago so i use it for all my phones. not sure how much it is to purchase...but its a briliantly simple app.
4. Camera quality issue may in part be addressed by this (from Symbian Freak);

I was pretty interested reading that but apparently the DNG app is limited to VGA resolution at the moment. Definitely the right kind of thing though. I'd be more than happy for each image the N95 took to weigh in around 3MB+ if needed if the image was uncompressed.
