N95 Firmware 21.0.016 released to service centres in EMEA: 1st. Rapport

I just returned form a Nokia service center and had a free upgrade to the latest firmware. I suggest you try the same, rather than experimenting with cracked (and illegal) versions of Phoenix - or even doing it yourself via NSU.

My Nokia technician tells me that their method is far safer than NSU - they attach a connector to the phone in the battery compartment - and use a dedicated PC which minimizes the risk that something goes wrong, bricking the phone.

Youtube videos work - if you have enough bandwidth. My first attempt was extremely disappointing, with video stopping, stuttering or not loading at all - even though I had almost max signal. Moving to a different position solved the problem. Video quality appears to be somwhat less than Emtube, but it is a great relief to be able to watch an embedded video. I am looking forward to a similar release for my E90 which I find far more useful for browsing.

Maps is version 1.2 wk4801. I did get a GPS fix in a few seconds from a position about 1m from the window in my appartment. The view of the sky is limited, as the window is facing a courtyard with buildings on all sides - and I am right in one corner. Quite OK i think.

Gallery performance is much better, at least when scrolling around the list of pictures. Opening the gallery still takes a few seconds the first time.

Otherwise, it looks like the previous version

It sounds great. I never had the firmware udated from a service centre. Is there a charge for this service.

It depends, I guess

I did not pay anything, the phone was under warranty and if you claim something like 'Bluetooth disconnects', the shop can make a warranty repair.

If you ask for new features like Flash Support, they may ask you to pay a service fee.

Finding the right shop and being a loyal customer there helps a lot too

just a word of warning....

Service centers are not the be-all and end-all of upgrades. I took mine to a Nokia service center in Newmarket, UK and they bricked my Nokia and recommended I take it back to the shop I bought it from... not what I'd call a great service. I'd have kicked up more of a fuss if CPW didn't replace it for me straight away.

But just so you're all warned...
