Success! P800 GPRS via bluetooth to Mac iBook!

I'm so happy, it took me hours to figure this out, but I should have gone to Ross Barkman's page in the first place: I got GPRS to work from the P800 to an Apple iBook via bluetooth this evening.

The following instructions deal with the FIDO network in Canada. You will have to adjust the settings for your local provider.

Once again, Ross Barkman comes through...

On his website, at http://www.taniwha.org.uk/

He has scripts for the Ericsson T68i series phones. His instructions deal mainly with USB and irda connections, and I own a P800, not a T68i, but on a whim, I figured I'd give it a go and try it via bluetooth.

AND IT WORKS. 8) 8) 8)

Here's the setup

Phone: Sony Ericsson P800, Fido network, unlimited GPRS account

Computer: Apple iBook 800mhz, OSX 10.2.3, Dlink "apple only" USB Bluetooth dongle.

How to get it working.

a) download Ross's scripts for the T68i

b) copy modem scripts to Library:Modem Scripts on the Mac

c) pair your phone with the Mac (make the phone discoverable, search for it on the mac, and pair them)

d) open up "Network settings" from the bluetooth pulldown menu, if you have the bluetooth icon on the top bar of the screen

e) Create a new location: name it Bluetooth GPRS

f) Pick "bluetooth modem adapter" from the "show" list if it doesn't already show

g) click the bluetooth modem tab, pick ericsson GPRS CID1

h) hit ppp tab, type in for service provider: fido, for account name: fido, for account pw: fido, for telephone number: internet.fido.ca
make sure save password is set.

i) Close network preferences. From the bluetooth dropdown menu, pick Open Internet Connect. Everything should be preset (you should see fido as the name, and in the telephone number box, it should read: internet.fido.ca, Fido, Main Number). Click connect. Make sure your phone is in bluetooth mode.

That's it. It connects. VERY cool stuff. Now if only iSync would support the P800, and let me transfer contacts, calendars, and other assorted goodies...

Once again, a huge thanks to Ross and his scriptkiddies (I mean that in the best way possible!). I'm buying Ross a "pint" tonight for sure.

Now if I could only get this working with my Thinkpad X30....

Have you succeded in dialing or sending SMS from the Address Book in Mac OS X?

When I click the Bluetooth icon in Address Book it seems to find th P800 (depending on the settings in the P800 I may have to accept the connection) but then the Bluetooth icon won't stay blue and the Dial and SMS Message options are disabled.

I haven't tried this, mainly because I use Entourage on the iBook, not the built in address book, which I haven't been too happy with.
