Hi all,

I'm new in here and this is my first post, I've got Nokia E90, I've updated the firmware to the latest, and the GPS takes lots of time to connect keeps ( Waiting for sat ) I wonder why. Can any one help with that.?

Thanks all

If you're usinf a-gps - in other words allowing internet connectivity to 'focus' and assist in triangulating your co-ordinates - then you should get a fix within 20 seconds. There may be other factors at play though, such as large clusters of buildings which could affect your fix time. The new firmware only adds a-gps though, and doesn't improve the fix time in any other way so if you're not allowing internet connectivity you won't see an improvement.

you need to make sure your firmware is the .40. version, as the latest firmware for some model numbers is not the .40. version.

You have to change your model number with NSS to a different model number that has the latest .40. firmware, then update it.

then as said, with the internet enabled GPRS (only uses 1k to make a fix), the AGPS is really really good!

i have had my E90 for a little under a week, have ordered an unlimited 384kbs web connection but it's not yet working.
i was under the impression that gps was free. utilizing the satellites already up there. i understand the need to have an internet connection for google maps, as that is there wrok angle. but why for nokia maps. and as the first post, it seems to take 3 - 5 minutes before i get a fix. and then it's off by a couple of hundred metres. i have the latest firmware, with a-gps. and have installed nokia maps 2.0.
have tried to install route 66, it wnet through the motions but nothing eventually happened. have it checked to allow all apps, not just those with signatures.

any comments?
thanks

Hi,

If you haven't got a network connection available at present then unfortunately it does take an awfully long time to get a lock.

The GPS receiver in Nokias isn't all that great - they certainly aren't SIRF star iii, I suspect mainly due to power usage with that type of receiver - but with A-GPS working correctly I get a fix in about ten seconds using only a few kilobytes to assist in the fix.
This Nokia A-GPS feature works in ANY application and they all have a comparable fix time.

GPS reception in itself is entirely free and network usage is NOT essential, it is simply a means of triangulating a signal quicker using both satellites AND network transmitters. It makes a huge difference to weak GPS units like the Nokia E90 and N95 and uses only a bare minimum of kilobytes to communicate with the network.

I'm not sure why your Route 66 isn't working, but I can tell you that it won't make any difference to your fix time anyway.

thanks, i found that google maps was slightly quicker in finding a signal, probably by it's use of telephone masts. it was quicker but the range was a 1km radius, where as nokia maaps was a few 100 yards off.
thanks for the reply.
