I recently lost my n95-1 due to a waitress spilling beer over it and got it replaced with the 8gb free of charge. At first I was apprehensive due to the lack of removable media card, no screen cover and was running v20 fw. However after 2 weeks of unsing an 8gb I have found the battery life much better (2 days with use instead of 1/2 - 1 day) the screen size with internet better (.2 makes a diffrence) and black case far better build quality )no light leakage or paint fading off buttons (I personally would encourage anyone looking to upgrade their -1 to go for the 8gb without hesitation. I know there has been a lot of criticism of the 8gb but in my opinion if you can make do without the expandable mem go for it.
I have visited this forum regularly for about 3 years now (even though this is my first post) and think I owe bart a big thankyou for all the helpful advice I have recieved through my n95's life.
rant over
TBH that didn't sound like a rant. It would be if you were saying "Dammit the 8Gb model is utter s**t!" lol 😃
Nice to hear you like your replacement.
It's obvious that the 8GB would be better Nokia are not gonna release a version worse than the original, they are going to build on the greatness of it and they did that with success in my opinion, only people who say it's not as good is a small handful people who are bitter that there normal N95 is no longer the top phone and will not face up to it
i have both and would be more than happy just to randomly pick 1 out of a hat and throw the other away if i was made too.
but the ram on the 8gb allows you to browse and download at the same time as pumping out your music whilst having rotate-me and rock&scroll running and much more so is great for using multiple apps etc at the same time
I don't understand what you was running firmware v20 on it sounds like you mean 8GB but 8GB firmware is not the same and is only up to v15 and is more powerful and is most likley to get more upgrades in the future b/c of it being newer and the N95 now getting on a bit

Obviously! They wouldn't intentionally make it worse. I know a lot of people complained about the lack of lens cover on the 8Gb. I'm not sure if they removed it to save space or because Nokia thought people weren't bothered about having it, but I know they reintroduced it in phones since the 8Gb.

I'll admit I was a little peeved when the 8Gb came out, not because of it's storage capacity, but because of it's extra ram, and that it came with a copy of Spiderman 3 (which at the time I hadn't seen yet). As time went on, firmwares were upgraded and bigger memory cards came out. I realised that the N95-1 was certainly more than capable of doing what I want.

I've just tried all of the above at the same time with my N95-1 and it didn't bat an eyelid... except rock&scroll... what the heck's that?

The firmware version number doesn't dictate how far on the phone has progressed. V50 on one phone can still not be as "advanced" or "powerful" as V1 on another phone.

You're not wrong there, mind. Other than extending battery life (and fixing that problem with album covers), I don't know how Nokia could improve further on the firmware anyway. Everything else on the phone can be upgraded by reinstalling the appropriate app.
I don't agree ccraig. I would like more RAM and better battery life but since the v20 firmware brought demand paging to the table only battery life remains a relevant argument for me in favour of the 8gb. The option to upgrade storage in future plus the convenince of much better transfer rate using a card reader swings the decision in favour of my trusty old N95-1.
Anyone who gets annoyed when their phone is superceeded will spend a lot of their life annoyed, technology moves fast and never faster than in mobile devices.

Who, me?
If so...no problem, even though Im not exactly sure what I did!
on my n95-1 so I had demand paging, and was not stuck with the lower versions which were riddled with mem probs where the 8gb would have been a great step forward.
As i said i would be happy with having either 1.but as i have tried running same things on both phones or just a boot up the speed difference is a lot faster on the 8GB ,faster than what you might think.
If you have the money for the 8GB i highly recommend that ,but if you don't i wouldn't be too disheartened as the N95-1 is capable of just as much just not at the same rates but you would not even notice if you have not had a 8GB anyway.
As for the Ram thing running multiple apps does work on N95-1 but it sometimes slows straight down also running game emulators on the N95-1 is pain especially vbagx it always use to make my phone reboot but none of them problems on 8GB.
what ever you buy don't listen to just the people who have a N95-1 b/c they are always going to be biased ,get the opinions of both phone type users.I've tried to be honest in my opinion and telling you how i see it and have even run tests on both phones to see how different things really are.
In terms of capability nearly identical
In terms of performance 8GB wins out right

i was not saying thats how far they proggressed you are way off the mark in my thinking here.
i was pointing out that the firmwares are not the same for both versions and that v20 for N95 is not as advanced as v15 for 8GB and it is only now on N95 with the v21 FW it is starting to catch up
and about the lense cover i complained about that myself .but the lense cover is hardly any justification for it being worse,
ccraig wrote: the lense cover is hardly any justification for it being worse,
You can't really make that assumption though. Saying something is 'worse' is purely an opinion, so the lack of lense cover be a deal breaker for someone if that is their opinion

This is the important thing we have to keep in mind here. Some peeps prefer one thing over another and it's all about opinion.
I would like extra RAM in my N95-1 just to play it safe, just as I have 2Gb of RAM in my PC right now. I know I'm never going to use it all but it's nice to know it's there. I'd also like a hard cover across my screen to give it that bit more protection (or any protection, for that matter) like there is with the 8Gb model. You never know when you might put your phone in the same pocket as your keys.
At the same time, I'd rather have the ability to remove and/or replace my memory card in my N95-1, either to transfer files to/from it quicker or to replace it with a bigger card. Using the PC analogy again, I'd want a computer that I could replace the HDD in it if I wanted to, rather than a computer where I couldn't. I also have bigger hands so I like it that the buttons on the front are that bit bigger than the 8Gb model.
To be fair ccraig, I'm not being biased in the slightest. I've used an N95-8Gb. A friend of mine has one and he asked me about applications he could install on it as well as getting some of his music on there as well. I spent a whole afternoon with him helping him find apps and get them installed, and transferring music over to it. He didn't have a clue about any of it so I took over and set everything up.
Pro: it did run smoothly but at the same time he only had it a week or so when I came to it. My N95-1 in comparison was running just as smoothly before I upgraded it to v21 today. Pro: it has more storage space in it than my N95-1 does at the moment (I've got 6Gb right now). I'm waiting for the 12Gb cards to come out very soon and I know I'll use all that space up in no time. Con: it took aaages to get his music transferred over. Thankfully for him he doesn't get music that often so won't need to transfer any on/off the phone any more than 10-20 tracks at any time.
IMO If you're absolutely sure you're not going to need more than 8Gb, not going to change the content on it that often, and you're not big of hand then go for the 8Gb model, it wins hands down. If you're not sure (or you know) you'll need more than 8Gb and will be using that storage space frequently then go for the classic model.
BTW I used the lens cover as an example because everyone knows the 8Gb model doesn't have one. I wasn't saying that I wouldn't get an N95-8Gb purely for that reason.
I'm happy you're happy with the phone that you have, and that it's more suited for you than the old one was. I'm not about to say it's worse either. I'm just saying that because it better suits you than the old one, doesn't mean it'll better suit everyone who does own the older model. It's all a matter of opinion.
